Powell Editorials Upon further review, maybe Floyd Mayweather should play the heel By Jason Powell Feb 19, 2008 - 10:23 AM CLICK FOR BIO Email This Article | Printer Friendly Page Send Us News & Results | Back to Main Listing I’m already having second thoughts about my response to Dot Net reader David Taylor’s comments in Monday’s Powell’s Mailbag regarding whether Floyd Mayweather should be a heel or a babyface. And if last night's Raw is any indication, WWE might be having the same second thoughts about positioning Mayweather as a babyface based on his alliance with Rey Mysterio. As David pointed out, Mayweather has played a heel role while building up his fights. A source who happens to be a boxing fan noted that Mayweather was smart enough to “thug it up” during some of the HBO 24/7 series that was used to promote his fight. He also felt even before watching Raw that Mayweather would be better off as a heel, in part because he’s comfortable playing that role. With Mysterio out of the match due to injury, WWE may have already called an audible. Mayweather was booed because he was in the middle of Oscar De La Hoya territory in Anaheim, but the Raw announcers didn’t go out of their way to explain the reaction he received. Another tell seemed to be that Mysterio wasn't sent to the ring with Mayweather when he confronted Big Show. While that could be a sign that WWE simply anticipated the reaction Mayweather would receive, they almost seemed to encourage the boos by sending the boxer out there with his entourage. Although Big Show grabbed Mysterio by the throat at the pay-per-view, he hasn’t really cemented his role as a heel. He’s been gone long enough that fans didn’t know whether to cheer or boo him when he walked out on Sunday night, and fans would forget about the incident with Rey quickly if Show were placed in the role of defending the business against a cocky outsider. Perhaps WWE would be better off playing it down the middle and let the fans dictate who plays what role. Let me know what you think. Should Mayweather be positioned as a heel or a babyface?
