TNA Bound For Glory onsite report: Notes on the live crowd's reaction, unexpected ECW wrestler meetings, two TNA wrestlers greet the live crowd as they waited to enter the building
Oct 17, 2011 - 04:05 PM

Dot Net reader Anthony Alston attended the TNA Bound For Glory pay-per-view in Philadelphia, Pa. on Sunday and sent the following notes on his experience.

This was a flat show that jumped the shark live after the third match. Hopefully it came across better on TV. Me and my friends arrived at the show around 6 p.m. and there was already a huge line, as TNA drew a pretty respectable crowd. While we were waiting in line, Matt Morgan, who is huge in person, actually came out and greeted fans, signed autographs, and took pictures. Classy guy.

Next out was Mr. Anderson who came out briefly to talk with security about something. He waved to the fans and that was it. Later in the evening just before the show started, we bumped Axl Rotten as we were leaving the concession stand. He was cool as could be.

The pre-show tag title match was decent live but got the show off to a bad start in my opinion because neither team was especially over. I am not the biggest fan of Brian Kendrick's character, but he and Austin Aries got the show off to a hot start. In a lot of ways this should have been the main event because Aries got a superstar pop all through the match, and Kendrick got a lot of heat for being Kendrick. Great match.

Jerry Lynn and Rob Van Dam still have it after all these years. RVD, of course, got a huge reaction from the Philly fans, and Lynn got a respectable reaction, but I think that the blame for that should go to TNA for how they presented Lynn. Great hardcore style wrestling match that only these two can pull off. It was a hell of a match, which is most likely their final one on a big stage. Glad I could see it live.

Samoa Joe was the star of the three-way match with Matt Morgan and Crimson, and did absolutely nothing to turn the pro-Joe crowd against him. Perhaps a middle finger to front office to prove that no matter what they do to him, he will always be over. If so, good for him. Decent enough action.

Bully Ray is a masterful heel. The heat he generated live was off the page hot. He turned the typically loyal to all things ECW crowd against him in the span of two minutes with one promo. Awesome stuff. If he doesn't get a main event run with the TNA Title there is no justice in this world. This is where the show peaked for the majority of the crowd as Ray and Anderson had a great brawl that kept the crowd's interest the entire time. The only thing that brought it down was when Anderson overshot the table spot. This got the classic "you f---ed up" chant. Overall, a good old school street fight.

This is where the show died a slow death with few bright spots.

The Knockouts Title match was god awful live as no one in the match got much of a reaction and the best part of this match for me at least was when it ended. The A.J. Styles vs. Christopher Daniels match has me conflicted in the sense that it was a good but not great match considering who was in the match. For all the good it was doing, Daniels somewhat killed its momentum with that strange mid-match promo, which the crowd completely shit on. Good match.

The Hardy/Jarrett segment was solid but Hardy initially didn't get the superstar reaction that you would think (maybe some fans agreed with Jarrett). As it went
on, the crowd really got behind him.

Wow is the only way to describe the Sting vs. Hulk Hogan fight, as it was better than it had any right to be. They used every trick from the old bag of tricks as it worked. This was actually better than there Starrcade '97 match even though that match had the better buildup. The Hogan turn didn't make a damn bit of sense but it didn't matter to the live crowd that ate it up.

The main event was just sad from the standpoint that they were obviously short on time, so a lot of what makes a big time title match for your biggest show of the year was missing, especially the formal in-ring intros. The match itself was solid but it didn't really engage the crowd, especially with that shitty finish. Hogan vs. Sting should have closed the show, which is a sad statement to make in 2011. This concluded a pretty lackluster show.

Of note, as we were leaving the show, Tommy Dreamer and Beulah greeted fans as they were leaving. Tommy hilariously thanked the fans for coming to the show and said
and I quote, "Sorry for the shitty finish." Classic Dreamer.
