May 4, 2014 - 6:30 PM

By Chris Shore

Prowrestling.net Members can look forward to their exclusive WWE Extreme Rules audio review with Jason Powell and Chris Shore later tonight.

WWE Extreme Rules
Aired live on WWE Network and pay-per-view
East Rutherford, New Jersey at Izod Center

WWE Extreme Rules Pre Show

The crowd was shown walking in. Josh Matthews checked in with the panel, which consisted of Booker T, Sheamus, and Alex Riley. They hyped the WeeLC match with apparently ends by pinfall or submission. Did anybody else know that? They transitioned to a video hyping Daniel Bryan vs. Kane. They talked about Bryan needing to leave Brie behind to keep her safe.

El Torito and Hornswoggle were shown getting ready in their locker room… A Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena video aired. The crowd was chanting for CM Punk put of the video. The panel got jacked up for the WeeLC match and turned it over to the announce team of Michael Cole, Jerry "The King" Lawler, and JBL. They introduced a midget announce team of Micro Cole, Jerry "The Mini King" lawler, and WeeBL. I hope something bad happens to Will Pruett…

A midget ring announcer handled ring introductions for El Torito and Hornswoggle…

El Torito (W/Los Matadores) vs. Hornswoggle (w/3MB) in a WeeLC match. There's a midget ref too. Torito hit a head scissor. Horny missed a dive because he couldn't clear the ropes. Torito pulled out a miniature chair. Then Hiorny climbed a miniature ladder that was lower than the top rope and was too scared to jump off. Torito stood and told him to jump and then laid back down. Horny jumped and Torito moved. He covered for two. He tried for ran but Horny hit a powerbomb that got a good reaction…[C]

Shore's Slant: I've never been so happy to have a commercial in my life.

Lawler corrected the names of the announcers. They are Jerry Smaller and JB Elf. The fight spilled to the floor and Horny cleared the mini-announce table. He put El Torito on it and hit an elbow drop that crushed the table. A "This is awesome" chant broke out. Back in the ring, Hornswoggle went to hit Torito with a mini-chair but hit Heath Slater instead. Slater took a table bump from the apron to tables setup at ringside.

They did another table spot with Los Matadores and Jinder Mahal getting cross-bodied through tables with ladders on them by El Torito. McIntyre tried to hit a flip onto Torito on a table on the floor, but the bull moved. Torito hit a seated Senton getting back in the ring on Hornswoggle to put him through the mini-table and covered for the win…

El Torito defeated Hornswoggle at 10:53.

Shore's Slant: That got crazy enough down the stretch to keep the crowd's attention but they almost lost it early. Everything before the break was dreadful, but after was a lot of fun and/or brutal. That ladder/table spot was rough. As I said in my predictions, as much as I hate myself, I have to admit that was kind of fun.

Zeb Colter cut a promo putting down Cesaro and RVD while putting over Swagger. It was rather non-descript… A video recapped The Shield's interaction with Evolution on Monday. Lilian tried to say something to the crowd but they cut her mic. Oops…

WWE Extreme Rules

The opening video hyped the top three matches. RVD made his entrance, followed by Swagger. A video recapped the feud between the three. Paul Heyman did the introduction for Cesaro. Heyman said WWE only got it right once a year. He started to put over ECW but swerved to mention Brock Lesnar beating Undertaker again. Cesaro made his entrance and there was an immediate disconnect from Heyman's promo…

1. Rob Van Dam vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter) vs. Cesaro (w/ Paul Heyman) in a triple threat elimination match. After a three way flurry, Cesaro powdered first. RVD quickly dumped Swagger to the floor and then hit a sunset bomb on Cesaro on the floor. RBD hit a rolling thunder on Swagger for two. Cesaro ran in and shoved Van Dam down. He did the Cesaro swing on Swagger. Van Dam kicked him in the face to break it.

Later, Swagger put the Ankle Lock on RVD. Cesaro hit a springboard into a European uppercut. Cesaro did the deadlift superplex on Swagger and RVD hit an immediate frog splash to eliminate Swagger. Jack Swagger was eliminated at 6:26.

Swagger and Colter left and Cesaro ducked a ick from RVD to hit the German suplex for two. He slammed RVD to the floor and climbed on the rail. Van Dam knocked him down and hit his corkscrew leg drop. That got a bigger ECDub chant than Heyman's promo. RVD rolled Cesaro in the ring and hit rolling thunder for two.

Van Dam hit a split legged moonsault for two. RVD went to the floor and pulled a trashcan out. He played to the crowd and turned toward the ring, where Cesaro hit a baseball slide into the can. Cesaro rolled RVD in the ring and came after him with the can. RVD hit a body scissor and then the back kick into the trashcan. I had a freeze from the Network as I finally got a HD feed. RVD laid the can on Cesaro and went to the top, but Cesaro moved and RVD killed the can. Cesaro finished with a neutralizer on the can…

Cesaro eliminated Rob Van Dam and won in 12:40.

Shore's Slant: Cole and the rest of the announce team didn't know it was an elimination match either because they tried to cover for no bell when Swagger was eliminated. Nice work WWE. Still, it was a perfect opening match. Lots of high energy and yet not too difficult to follow. Cesaro also looked good. The match did more for him than Heyman's promo did. Heyman is just not transferring his neat to new guys. I'm not sure why.

Backstage, Daniel Bryan was being treated by the trainer. Stephanie came in and had the doc leave. She said she couldn’t control Kane and she didn’t want to see him hurt. She told him she felt like he needed to officially surrender the title and not face Kane. Bryan told her to get out of his face and said he was walking in and out as champion. Stephanie said he would be Kane's bitch… A Bolieve video aired…

Lana came out and said they were dedicating the match to the most powerful man in the world. The crowd gave her the "What?" treatment. She said they were dedicating it to the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin. She introduced the man who now lives in Russia, Alexander Rusev. Truth came out with a mic and said they were dedicating this match to the USA. They ran to the ring and Rusev kicked Woods into Truth, knocking them both down. Rusev slammed Woods into the ring apron and rolled Truth in the ring to start the match…

2. Alexander Rusev (w/Lana) vs. R-Truth and Xavier Woods in a handicap match. Truth hit an axe kick for a near fall, but Lana finally decided to give him the "crush" command. Rusev locked in the Acolyte for the win…

Alxeander Rusev submitted R-Truth at 2:52.

Post-match, Lana gave Rusev another crush command for Woods so he hit a fall-away slam on Woods…

Shore's Slant: I wouldn’t have given Truth that much offense but we're arguing around the edges here. Excellent moment for Rusev.

The New Jersey Special Olympics team were shown in the crowd… Backstage, Triple H cut a promo with Renee Young where Batista stood uncomfortable close to Young. He reran through their accomplishments and said the Shield thought their egos would be their undoing, but their egos only proved why they would win. Randy said you either evolved or you died. He said, "Believe dat!" and they did the Shield fist pose…

Bad New Barrett made his entrance and said he had bad news, Big E was going to lose tonight…

3. Big E vs. Bad News Barrett for the Intercontinental Championship. Barrett started fast and dumped Big E to the floor. He slammed E around and rolled him back in the ring. E reversed a suplex and went for another, but Barrett used the buckles to reverse into his own suplex. Barrett hit his kick through the ropes, but E came right back with a belly-to-belly suplex. The crowd turned on E at this point. E hit a spear through the ropes for a decent pop.

Big E ran for his splash, but Barrett hit the Winds of Change instead. Barrett also hit the Wasteland for two. Big E hit his tackle and dropped his straps, but Barrett escaped and hit a flying bull hammer elbow for the win…

Bad New Barrett won the Intercontinental Championship at 7:53.

Shore's Slant: Not a bad match, but the crowd shit on Big E so much it seemed boring at times. I appreciate Cole's attempt to make this title run mean something by saying that, but it just rings hollow.

A video for the Shield vs. Evolution aired…

Shore's Slant: Holy crap! I never would have had this on here. I'm betting Cena goes on last now and they blame it on the cage.

Evolution made their ring entrance. I love their ring entrance music. It's a simple jam but I think it fits perfectly. They bounced around in the ring to get ready. They waited for a while and JBL pointed out the Shield were making them wait. Nicely done. The Shield finally made their entrance. They squared off in the ring and Shield cleared Evolution once before the match started…

4. Evolution vs. The Shield. Triple H and Seth Rollins started. Rollins dumped Hunter to the floor and dove on him. He rolled Hunter back in the ring, but Orton stalled Rollins enough for Hunter to hit a big clothesline and Evolution took control. Batista got crazy boos every time he tagged in.

Rollins started to make his way for a tag, but Evolution took out his teammates. Rollins hit an enziguri on Orton and got the hot tag on Ambrose. Ambrose cleared the ring and put the figure four on Orton. Batista made the save. Reigns ran in to help Ambrose and dumped Batista to the floor. He went to the floor and tossed Batista in the wall. He charged at Hunter for the spear, but Hunter moved and Reigns hit the steps. Evolution settled into control on Ambrose.

Reigns got the hot tag at 12:36 and the crowd went nuts for everything he did. He took out all three guys and hit Batista with the jumping kick on the apron. He took out the other two members and went back to the ring, allowing Batista to hook for the powerbomb. Rollins flew in with the knee and they triple powerbombed Batista. Hunter and Orton pulled Reigns out on the cover.

The match broke down and Hunter hit a Pedigree on Reigns. He tried to pull Batista over to cover but Ambrose broke it up. He and Hunter fell to the floor and Orton hit an RKO on Reigns. Batista covered and Rollins broke it up. Orton pulled Rollins from the ring and they, along with Triple H and Ambrose, battled up into the stands.

Orton and Hunter pounded Ambrose down to the floor. Rollins dove on them from the bleacher seating and Ambrose took the worst of it. Back in the ring, Batista hit a spinebuster and the crowd came unglued with heat. He setup for the Batista bomb, but Reigns shoved him away. He hit the Superman punch and then hit a spear for the win…

The Shield defeated Evolution at 19:51.

Shore's Slant: Yep, that was every bit the match I thought it would be. They told a solid story and mixed in a lot of the Shield's innovative offense. I struggle to think how it could have been better. Reigns was a little over the top before the spear, but forgivable. Really, well done and the absolutely right finish.

A WWE Network spot aired and Cole mentioned again the big satellite companies refused to carry the show… The cage started to lower and the hype video for Cena vs. Wyatt aired.

Shore's Slant: Daniel Bryan is going on last. I never would have thought. Bravo WWE. Bravo.

Cena made his ring entrance and almost caused a fight in the Special Olympics seats by giving away his ring gear. The Wyatts made their entrance and Bray acted crazy around the cage before climbing in…

5. John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt in a cage match. Bray started fast and drew great cheers from the crowd. A monstrous "Let's go Wyatt" chant started about 90 second in. Cena had his first flurry of offense and went to the corner. Harper and Rowan were right there to distract him and allow Bray to attack from behind.

Bray held Cena against the cage and Rowan slammed into him from the outside. Cool spot. Cena tried to climb out again and again Rowan and Harper were there. Cena fought off Wyatt once, but the second tome Bray crotched him. JBL said Cena would have won if it wasn't for Harper and Rowan. There's one near escape.

Wyatt stood Cena up and danced with him before hitting his version of the chokeslam for two. Cena came right back with a surprise dropkick. Cena started climbing and Wyatt popped up into his crab walk and headed towards the door. Cena jumped down and stopped Wyatt, but Wyatt threw him into the cage at 9:30.

All of a sudden Cena heated up the five moves of doom. He hit the Five Knuckle Shuffle, but Wyatt crabbed the cage off the AA. Cena transitioned it into a powerbomb lift and hit it for two. Cena called for the door to be opened. Rowan took the door and closed it. Cena pushed the door open on him and got a leg out. Rowan ran over and pushed it closed, but Cena powered it right back open to a lot of heat. Wyatt attacked from behind. That's two.

Wyatt went for a senton and missed. Cena quickly climbed the cage and started down the side. Rowan climbed up the cage and pushed Cena back in from below. Cena knocked Bray back down from the rope and tried in a different spot. Harper climbed up and knocked Cena back in. Cena dragged Harper into the cage and knocked him out. Cena tried to go over the top as Bray tried to go out the door. Cena slammed the door on his face. That's three.

Rowan stopped Cena by threatening him with a chair. Cena went back in the ring and Wyatt hit the senton for two. He setup for Sister Abigail, but Cena slipped out and hooked the STF. Bray crawled to the corner and used the ropes to choke Cena and get him to let go. Rowan tried to pull Bray out but Cena pulled Bray back in.

Bray tossed Cena into the cage and tried to climb out. Cena stopped him and hit a super AA. He covered, but Harper broke the count. Cena took them all out and tried to climb again. Rowan climbed up and they fought on top. Cena used Rowan's beard to slam him off the top. He fell back in the ring and started for the door. When he reached it, the sounder went off and the lights went out.

The lights cam back on and a little kid was singing "He's got the whole world in his hands," but they were making him sound like a demon. Cena just stared in horror. Wyatt grabbed him from behind and hit Sister Abigail. He knelt for a moment and then left the cage for the win…

Bray Wyatt defeated John Cena at 21:11.

Post-match, Wyatt hugged the kid and called him a "good boy." They walked to the back as Cena recovered and the announce team laid out…

Shore's Slant: I'm going to get the negative Nancy label for this, but I didn't like it. Now, I understand if you did. It was different than anything we've seen, or at least seen in a while. But for me personally, I like a little more realism in my wrestling. I realize I say this in the same report where I gave a little praise, pun not intended, to a WeeLC match, but this is a different level of the card. I don't think I would have been thrilled with it, but even having the kid sing without the effects would have been better than this.

The pre-show panel put over how creeped out they were by what they saw. They recapped the WeeLC match…

6. Paige vs. Tamina Snuka for the WWE Divas Championship. Paige started quick and hit her knees through the ropes, but Tamina knocked her off the top rope to the floor and took control. She hit three body slams in a row while taunting the crowd. Paige charged at Tamina and tackled her to the floor. She went back to the apron and tried for a head scissor, but Tamina caught her and whipped her into the barricade.

Paige hit a move I missed, but the pin fall was so close the ref couldn't stop himself from hitting three. Tamina reversed a crossbody into a black hole slam. She setup for the superkick, but Paige grabbed the leg and reversed into her finisher for the win…

Paige retained the WWE Divas Championship at 6:16.

Shore's Slant: An OK match. I thought it would be better, but it didn't stink. They still need to work on giving Paige more character at the main event roster level. Not everybody saw her in NXT.

Post-match, the Wyatt family sounder went off again. He was shown backstage with the kid and his family. Wyatt said "little Johnny" did a good job tonight and now they were free. He said Cena was free now too and he would do what all the broken and homeless do, come to him. He asked little Johnny what they would do then. Little Johnny said, "Follow the Buzzards." The gave him the demon voice again, but the word "follow" was heard with both his normal and affected voice…

Shore's Slant: Ugh. That sort of silliness just turns me off. It's just too far for my personal suspension of disbelief.

The Kane vs. Daniel Bryan hype video played. Daniel Bryan made his ring entrance sans Brie Bella. Kane was out next. Still can't believe this is last…

7. Daniel Bryan vs. Kane in an Extreme Rules match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Bryan attacked Kane in the entryway to start the match. Kane slammed him against the metal barricades and then got in a couple of kendo shots after pulling it from under the ring. Bryan came fighting back and clotheslined Kane over the top rope.

Kane got the better on the floor and tossed Bryan into the corner. He tossed a number of chairs in the ring and set on in the corner. Bryan grabbed a kendo stick and hit Kane once, but Kane knocked him down on the next one. Kane hit a couple of chair shots, but Bryan scored a drop toehold that dropped Kane on the chair in the corner. Kane went to the floor and Bryan hit a dive.

The both cleared the announce tables and Kane ended up selling a blow from the flimsy cover of the cowl of the table. Funny. Kane went for a chokeslam on the announce tables but Bryan fought back and hit a tornado DDT. He charged at Kane and Kane drove him into the stairs. Kane setup the stairs for the pildriver. Bryan pushed off and drove Kane into the ring post.

Bryan took the kendo stick and beat Kane up the ramp. Kane hit a right hand and drove Bryan into a light board that went off. They battled to the back and Kane wrecked gorilla position. Kane even threw a monitor in a bucket of ice water. They battled farther back and Kane slammed Bryan into the TV truck. He slammed Bryan onto a car, wrecking the hood and windshield. Kane threw a gas cylinder threw the windshield of that car and accidently punched through the back window of another car.

Bryan grabbed a tire iron from a trunk and knocked Kane out. He tried to drag him and couldn't. He saw a forklift nearby with a pallet on it and pulled Kane to the pallet. He hit him with the tire iron 50 times and then drove Kane to the ring with the forklift. He raised the forklift till it was above the ropes and dumped Kane in the ring. He climbed to the top of the forklift and hit a diving head-butt for two.

Bryan setup for the running knee and Kane grabbed for a chokeslam. Bryan's momentum carried him around and Kane had to pick him back up to hit the chokeslam for two. Kane intimidated the ref and then called for the Tombstone on a chair, but Bryan reversed on the chair for two. Bryan wore Kane out with the chair and locked in the Yes Lock. Kane grabbed the Kendo stick and hit Bryan with it, but Bryan used it to relock the hold.

Kane dragged himself to the edge of the ring and slid out. Bryan went for a dive and Kane caught him for a chokeslam on the announce table. Kane rolled Bryan into the ring and pulled a table from under the ring. He set it ringside and set it on fire. He stood on the apron for a chokeslam but Bryan kicked him off onto the table. A guy ran up and emptied a fire extinguisher on the table and Kane. Kane slid into the ring in a cloud of smoke and took the running knee for the win…

Daniel Bryan retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at 22:29.

Post-match, Bryan celebrated up the ramp. Kane sat up and looked at Bryan. He stood, and his pyro popped and music played to close the show…

Shore's Slant: Well, they gave Bryan the big table spot, but there was so much fire extinguisher sprayed on Kane that it almost took away from the moment. Then they played Kane's music to close the show? I get they may do this one more time, but you just have the heel stand and play his music? I'm not sure I get it.

Overall a very entertaining PPV. I didn't like the finishes of the last two matches, but I appreciate the WWE Championship being in the main event and I loved the six-man match. The undercard delivered for the most part. Jason Powell and I will have more later tonight for our Member's in their exclusive audio review of the show. Thanks for watching along tonight.
