Twilling's Blog: Did Chris Jericho make the Tag Team Championships so relevant that DX finally wants them?

-Chris Jericho was professional wrestling’s Most Valuable Player in 2008. If you did not vote for him, you probably voted for Shawn Michaels. I believe at one point, I even anointed Mark Henry as the MVP (no pun intended) of WWE. Well, as 2009 comes to a close, is there any doubt that Jericho is the man in WWE?
Over the past several years, the WWE Intercontinental Championship had become nothing but a prop. The title that was the centerpiece of historic matches at WrestleMania III and WrestleMania X was not defended in six consecutive WrestleMania events. This past year, JBL defended the title against Rey Mysterio and at that moment, the title had a rebirth.
Mysterio had arguably the feud of the year over that title with Jericho. I would think only Jeff Hardy vs. C.M. Punk would be a more sought after feud in terms of “best of the year” quality. Even though Jericho ended up losing that feud, and the IC Title to Mysterio, you could credit Jericho for bringing the title back to prominence. Look at where it is now and thank Jericho.
Enter the WWE Tag Team Championships. The Miz and John Morrison were very good tag team champions. However, they did nothing to upgrade the prestige of the titles and although that was more of WWE’s fault of not caring about the tag team division, Miz and Morrison are not Jericho and Big Show.
A few years ago when Degeneration X had their last run, they kicked the shit out of every single tag team in WWE. They usually did it in squash fashion and at times, they beat three teams in a row over about a five minute period. Hell, they even repeatedly defeated the Spirit Squad, who happened to be the champions, and five guys. Yes, two guys regularly beat five.
So, the tag team titles were not cool enough for DX. Actually, they just weren’t important enough for DX. The tag team titles were below DX. This is not the first time this has happened. When Shawn Michaels feuded with Jericho in 2008, Jericho was the Intercontinental Champion and he needed to drop the title so Michaels could win a match or two during the feud (the IC Title was below Michaels).
Jericho already made the Intercontinental Championship relevant again in 2009. Now, he has made Big Show intriguing and reestablished the tag straps all in one swoop. Enter DX. When DX beat the crap out of every tag team a few years ago, they never bothered to win the tag titles. Now, Jericho has made the tag titles important again, so it seems as though DX is ready to cash in on Jericho’s hard work.
On Monday’s Raw, DX pinned Jericho and Big Show. More specifically, Triple H pinned Chris Jericho. He has done that a lot over the years. I’ll admit; I would like to see a JeriShow vs. DX tag team championship feud, but I have this eerie feeling that DX will win the straps and Jericho’s blood, sweat, and tears will be experienced in DX’s triumphs. Jericho deserves better than that, and I just don’t see him going over in any feud that involves Triple H.
