Trying to figure out what exactly we saw on Monday night with Shane McMahon and Randy Orton, and what WWE does next

Wednesday, JANUARY 28 – 2:25 P.M. (CT)
-WWE really painted themselves into a corner after Monday’s angle involving Shane McMahon and Randy Orton. The angle had been playing out very nicely. Orton has been on top of his game since returning from injury and is absolutely white hot right now. The Legacy faction finally started to come together and with the addition of Ted DiBiase, there looked to be a great level of potential for the trio.
A week before the Royal Rumble, Orton punted Vince McMahon in the head after a few weeks of frustrating interactions with Stephanie McMahon. Both Jason Powell and myself figured Stephanie was working with Orton and would be a part of Legacy. I am sure a lot of people were excited about that prospect. Fast forward to Sunday’s pay-per-view and Orton, not knowing his job status, won the Royal Rumble match, ensuring his place in a title match at Wrestlemania.
The next sound you heard was everything starting to unravel. Orton came out on Monday’s Raw and made a bunch of excuses. He brought out some lawyers and made a bunch of cowardly threats. I am guessing WWE feared Orton’s increasingly vocal face reactions from the crowd. Steve Austin would have never came to the ring with a team of lawyers. Exactly. WWE, even though they could have a goldmine on their hands, does not want Orton receiving cheers.
At the end of the show, Orton threatened to sue WWE to the point where Wrestlemania would be cancelled. Logically, the entire Raw roster came out to the stage because they were pissed. Orton stood up to all of them, so that was impressive. He then begged Stephanie to fire him. In a world where Kane has a job after what he has done previously to Linda McMahon and Shane, we knew Orton was going nowhere.
So, we figure this is the moment Stephanie reveals her long going partnership with Orton and she cuts a promo on her dad, with whom she has feuded with extensively in the past. Instead, she brings out Shane McMahon. Shane McMahon? What the hell is he going to do? By the way, isn’t this the same guy Stephanie slapped across the face a few weeks back in a classic, middle aged, sibling squabble?
Stephanie left the ring and now many options are swirling around in the minds of wrestling fans. Is Shane with Legacy? Is Legacy going to kick the shit out of Shane and then celebrate with Stephanie? Is Hornswoggle going to come out and reveal he can talk so he can explain why there was no payoff to the paternity angle? Is Horny joining Legacy?
Shane then attacked Orton. Fair enough. Three on one beatdown, Stephanie joins the party and gives Shane that bitchy stare, and Legacy stands tall. Wait a minute, Shane is kicking Orton’s ass, which is hard to believe, not only because Orton is a top notch athlete in the prime of his life, but because Shane’s punches were landing at about a 9% rate. Okay, at least Legacy will outnumber him and Shane will go down.
Sorry folks; Shane McMahon just beat the hell out of the top heel on the show and the hottest act in wrestling, plus his two little friends. Did I just see that? Surely Legacy will come back and Stephanie will still join them, right? Right? No, instead, Shane gets pissed at Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston, because those guys always upset me too. Must be nice to be the boss, both on and off camera.
From here, what can WWE do? Will there be a McMahon in Legacy? If Stephanie joins, how will she explain what happened on Monday night? Will the group have to recruit a fourth and fifth member to fend off Mighty Shane? Obviously, this has the potential to be a very intriguing and historic angle, but even Plaxico Burress is amazed at how WWE shot themselves in the foot on Monday.
