2/13 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Feb 13, 2014 - 05:23 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Big Show has gone from smiley guy to angry bad ass who was wronged, to old man killer, to vengeful legal action man, and is now back to being smiley. Why should I care about his character again?

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Another boring Raw later, and I find myself losing interest in the Elimination Chamber match. I like what they are doing with The Shield and The Wyatt Family, but just having Orton lose to a list of chamber opponents doesn't really add much to the match. We need stories for these guys. Why does no one seem motivated to grab the Unified Championship?

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): I'm really optimistic about what we're starting to see in WWE. John Cena's promo said to me that WWE is finally going to give the younger, potential-filled talent take a larger role. It's clear that they have high hopes for guys like Reigns, Bryan, and Cesaro. With Alexander Rusev and other talent on the verge of being called up, I'm really hopeful that they give these young guys a chance to develop and grow, rather than labeling them failures if they don't catch fire straight away.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @InnominatusTTV): It's disappointing to see Randy Orton being booked so weak on WWE television. I get what they are going for with his new heel act, but the first unified champion should be more than a vulnerable champion.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): It's a testament to all involved that the Shield/Wyatt angle is going as well as it is. On paper, it's a story we've seen played out countless times - tit-for-tat promos, interference, a standoff, and, presumably, a brawl next week. But thanks to hot acts and great promos, it's been a delight so far. It's not always about the order of the song, but the pitch of the notes.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): I'm still struggling to find that pre-WrestleMania euphoria that usually comes this time of year, and WWE isn't doing anything to help the situation. Elimination Chamber feels like an afterthought, and the only thing that is obvious for WrestleMania right now is I don’t want to see the guy who is main eventing, Batista, in that spot. There is a ton of work left for WWE to do to make this feel like a big Mania. Otherwise, Network subscribers might feel cheated from a lackluster show. That's not a good way to launch this new endeavor.

TNA

Will Pruett: The Knockout Division in TNA was exceptionally strong about six months ago. There are a ton of reasons why it has significantly weakened, but despite the reasons, it is still quite sad. Velvet Sky's segment with Chris Sabin showed an awful lot about what TNA feels about women these days. I'm very worried about this division going forward.

Jake Barnett: Samoa Joe is back to being a bad ass. I like it. It makes you wonder why it took eight years to tap that resource again. That being said, you still have to have him interact with the MVP/Dixie storyline at some point, and that will deal down anybody caught in it's vortex. Can we please stop the authority crap in wrestling?

Zack Zimmerman: From everything I've been told, the Wolves are very happy with how things are going in TNA. Despite fans' outside impressions, guys inside like Samoa Joe, Austin Aries, and Kurt Angle are helping the new talent get motivated and develop a feel for the lay of the land. I still have no reason to be optimistic, but it's cool to hear that some young talent are being given a chance and are creatively satisfied.

Ryan Kester: While the work of MVP was commendable on last week's edition of Impact, the addition of another TNA authority figure is simply too much. TNA has gone back to this well time and time again to the point that they can bring in anyone and it makes no impact whatsoever.

Chris Shore: The announcement of another all cage match Lockdown soured me instantly on the PPV. So much of the build is already in the can, and very few feuds feel like they are in need of a cage match. I get the idea of a gimmick show, and I'm not against it in theory, but book to the damn show. Don't just have random cage matches in the middle of feuds for no reason.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (Network): Is it weird to want to watch the entire WCW pay-per-view library from 2000 to 2001? Something about a spectacular train-wreck excites me.

Jake Barnett (Randy Orton): There has been a lot of talk about how Daniel Bryan's push has been cut off at the knees, but you have to feel equally bad for Randy Orton. His relationship with The Authority has ruined his character, he's been put in matches no one has wanted to see, and now that he has some fresh opponents coming into the chamber, it seems there is heat on him backstage. As much as Daniel Bryan, Orton has been put in a position to fail. The sad thing is he didn't have the connection with the crowd to succeed despite his position.

Zack Zimmerman (NXT): NXT Arrival is two weeks away and the build has been consistent and visible for the last month of NXT TV. Dallas vs. Neville in a ladder match for the NXT Title, Cesaro vs. Zayn, and Paige vs. Emma for the Women's title are on the marquee. This close to the big kickoff, I highly recommend checking out Hulu for the recent free episodes and clips to familiarize yourself with what's to come.

Ryan Kester (NXT): It's been enjoyable seeing NXT staples like Alexander Rusev and Emma getting some exposure on the main roster. WWE is certainly suffering from a sense of the stagnant with their reliance on old hands, so it's a nice bit of fresh air to see some call ups for some of the talent WWE has waiting in the wings.

Darren Gutteridge (NXT): Lots of positive buzz has been generated over Adam Rose by those who have seen him. Colt Cabana even said he will be everyone's new favourite guy soon. I'm remaining open minded about the idea (OTT characters usually get a kick out of me), but all the buzz better be bang on if I'm to consider the character as a better fit for the South African than the Leo Kruger turn.
