11/28 Dot Net One Shots - Thanksgiving Edition: The Dot Net staff members share their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, and more
Nov 28, 2013 - 03:00 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc). This week, the staff also passes along their Thanksgiving thoughts.

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): If WWE is going to unify the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships, at least they're consistent with their unification matches. In 2001 there was an authority figure hanging on too long and big-footing main stories. In 2001 there was a random, poorly built unification match in December. WWE really should get credit for the consistency here.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Survivor Series didn't do anything to rekindle my interest the WWE brand, and Raw didn't either. I haven't been so in unenthused about pro wrestling in ages. It's like WWE has went into creative hibernation until WrestleMania season, and the results have been downright insulting to longtime fan.

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): WWE's creative direction is in a dreadful place this season. The company is so outwardly focused, presumably on their sponsors, shareholders, and network expansion, that their inward focus is non-existant and there seems to be no regard for product quality. Building an addition on a house with termite damage doesn't serve the needs at hand.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @InnominatusTTV): It's almost impressive how much air WWE has let out of their product in just a few short weeks. It wasn't all that long ago that I was excited about almost every aspect of WWE's programming, but they quickly over-thought and overbooked their stories into a point that the only response I have to their current efforts is apathy.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): I don't think anyone would have singled out Roman Reigns as the guy to apparently be positioned as The Shield's breakout star. He was Curtis Axel levels of bland on NXT, but his improvement on the main roster has been astounding. It's unexpected in retrospect, but hardly surprising given the past 12 months.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): WWE has put me in a tough situation. On the one hand, unifying the titles is a bad idea for business as both tours need a "world champion" to help draw. On the other hand, the last thing I want to see is yet another PPV match end with shenanigans that leaves fans scratching their heads.

TNA

Will Pruett: Remember when TNA abolished monthly pay-per-views in favor of telling better stories and not losing a ton of money running monthly pay-per-views? Well, they aren't losing the money, but they also aren't telling better stories. They're booking to the Impact pseudo-pay-per-view now and it's just as bad.

Jake Barnett: Are you aware Dixie Carter has a twitter account? It's apparently more important than anything else in the show. At least Aces and Eights is over, that's a universally positive development.

Zack Zimmerman: As little attention as I've paid to TNA recently, one positive I've noticed is how well their wrestlers are made to look in the video packages leading up to main events. Bobby Roode and Austin Aries have come across to me like major athletic stars in recent weeks. However creatively, I can't comment on the product because I really have checked out.

Ryan Kester: The new studio for Impact looked good. It's certainly not an impressive venue, but it looks so much better than the depressing former Universal Studios spot that it didn't disappoint. TNA still has a long way to go in fixing their product, but they took a step in the right direction by getting back into a cheap location without looking cheap in the process.

Chris Shore: TNA had a tough break with the ratings last week. The show, while not perfect, is so much better as a whole than it has been in the past and I find the two hours flying by as opposed to dragging along at a snail's pace. TNA needs to understand that the low ratings are not indicative of what was on the show that night. Rather, they show a long downward trend that will only get better by staying the course on good storytelling and better paced shows. In other words, they shouldn't panic right now simply because there wasn't a quick turnaround.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (Thanksgiving): Wrestling is at a pretty low point right now, but I'm thankful for the abundance of wrestling content available online (some of it is even available legally!). I can think of a random Raw segment from 1997, and in 45 seconds be watching it. It's mind-blowing.

Jake Barnett (Thanksgiving): I wish everyone an awesome Thanksgiving. Enjoy your family rituals (or avoid them, if you hate your family) and hopefully a great meal. There should also be some decent football to watch, if you're into that kind of thing.

Zack Zimmerman (Thanksgiving): As I approach my one-year mark on staff, I'm thankful that I'm able to write about something I have a passion for, with such a diverse and credible group of colleagues, for readers who share our passion and value (or discord) our opinions. If you're reading this, I sincerely wish good times and happiness to you and yours.

Ryan Kester (Thanksgiving): Happy Thanksgiving to all of our American readers. I hope everyone gets a chance to spend time with friends and family and get away from the busy time that is the holiday season. I'm personally thankful for the opportunity to work with such a great group of guys on this site, and for my two adorable nephews that I am blessed with the opportunity to see grow up around me.

Darren Gutteridge (Thanksgiving): I would like to wish all of my American friends a happy Thanksgiving. It isn't part of my culture, but any holiday that encourages eating too much is to be celebrated.

Chris Shore (Thanksgiving): Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers whether your country/culture officially celebrates today or not. The truth is we all have so many things to be thankful for and whether you sit down to gorge yourself on a meal today or not, take a moment and realize what those things are. May your blessing continue.
