9/26 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Sep 26, 2013 - 03:00 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Battleground sounds like the most generic pay-per-view WWE has put on in a long time. Maybe this brings up a larger issue of pay-per-view naming. What if WWE called this show Bryan vs. Orton II instead? Would it be at all less interesting?

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): I like that WWE is trying to re-establish some of their babyfaces, but it's frustrating because if they hadn't been emasculated to begin with, this wouldn't even be necessary. It's essentially taking two steps backward to take one step forward, with no logic in sight.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): Yet another miss fire in the saga of Daniel Bryan went down Monday in my humble opinion. Would Bryan not have looked more of a hero had he told his partners to leave at the end, and take on Rollins himself in a fair fight? Instead they made the babyfaces look bad by resorting to petty revenge via the group beat down. It's a good job Bryan has enough momentum to avoid being derailed at this point.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): It does appear that WWE is moving Daniel Bryan's girlfriend, Brie Bella, into his current storyline. While it makes perfect sense, I personally dislike the idea. I believe a wrestler's personal life should stay in the personal, and while I realize their relationship is a big part of the Total Divas reality show, I see a significant difference between a partially scripted show and the fully scripted WWE main shows.

TNA

Will Pruett: When I think of all the classic World Championship programs in wrestling history, I think of the babyface challenger ignoring the champion to address an authority figure. A.J. Styles current story could be happening without the title involved. Shouldn't the title be important to him?

Zack Zimmerman: How long have wrestling fans been complaining about the overuse of -- and flaws in -- heel authority figures? With that in mind, why would Dixie Carter of all people need to fill that role? Where's the money matchup in this angle? What's the payoff? I'm the guy writing for the wrestling website, why do I have so many questions about this?

Chris Shore: While I completely and utterly dislike the "heel Dixie" story in TNA, I also believe it is wildly unfair to call it a rip off of the WWE storyline with Triple H and Stephanie. The two approaches are completely different, and other than both stories featuring a heel authority figure, I fail to see any direct comparison between them. In other words, hate the story because it's bad, not because it was stolen.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): Adam Cole as World Champion is definitely intriguing. The setup of both Michael Elgin and Jay Briscoe as challengers is great. Ring of Honor took a big step towards good storytelling this past weekend. As far as iPPV issues, I'm not going to complain about a free feed. I'm just going to reiterate how the world may not be ready for iPPV.

Zack Zimmerman (ROH): After months away from offering live iPPV's and over a year from the initial split with Go Fight Live, GFL and ROH aired Death Before Dishonor free of charge. Boy did that backfire. Rather than coming back strong and making viewers confident, there were just as many technical issues as there always have been, verifying that it's still not a viable option. That aside, congrats to new champion Adam Cole. I wish I had actually been able to see the match.

Darren Gutteridge (WWE2K14): The roster reveal was a little underwhelming, but as with many things about 2K14, fans need to keep in mind that 2K haven't had as much time to get it together as THQ have had. The roster lacking certain acts like the Wyatts, Langston and RVD can be rectified with DLC down the line, but it doesn't speak well of WWEs youth movement when The Shield and the PTP are the only new additions.

Chris Shore (ROH): Adam Cole is a blue chipper on the indy scene and ROH made the right call giving him the title. It has been quite some time since they have had a believable heel champion that babyfaces can chase, and ultimately, defeat. I'm not entirely sure who that babyface is yet, but when they figure it out it should do good things for viewership.
