9/5 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).
Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Pairing the red hot Rob Van Dam with Ricardo Rodriguez is one of the most puzzling choices WWE has made in a long time. Every week, this team just gets more awkward. I don't want to see Ricardo back with Del Rio, but I'd strongly suggest moving him away from RVD as well.
Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): WWE isn't doing a lot of favors for babyfaces not named Daniel Bryan with this new power trip storyline. I hope they get it on the right track soon, so everyone in the new corporation has a strong character to feud with.
Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): While I still share some of the concern about how spineless Triple H is making his roster look, the sympathy and passion gathering behind Daniel Bryan can't be overlooked. His "yes"/"no" shtick got over, but has felt novel at times. The reactions he's getting now are that of a top-level superstar who fans are paying to see and cheer for. Let's just hope this angle doesn't kill every other babyface on the roster at his expense.
Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): I know that establishing a new status quo, and a slow burn build, both require some repetition, but even I felt Monday's closing segment was one too many in the "Daniel Bryan beat down collection". Yes, when Show or another babyface fights back it'll get a pop, but I think enough work had been done already for that to go down on Raw.
Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): I think WWE is making a big mistake by not having Big Show fight back already. Fans are starting to turn on him hard, and I don't know how much farther he can go before no one buys his tears anymore. I really thought they were going to pull the trigger on Raw after the way the crowd reacted on Smackdown, but they didn't. I hope they don't take this too far to save Big Show from the backlash.
Will Pruett: Part of me wants Bound for Glory to be over right now. While I plan to enjoy the build to the show, I know TNA won't start anything new and exciting until after it. Honestly, I just want the Aces and Eights saga to end. It's been very uneven and has contained far more bad than good.
Jake Barnett: The BFG series is a booking mess due to the way the final weeks have been crammed in. Next year, it may be beneficial to avoid a tournament and just tell traditional wrestling stories.
Zack Zimmerman: At the beginning of this year's BFG series, Will Pruett and I recorded an audio where we both stated that we liked the series as TNA's most intricate storytelling device. A few months later, I can say I was wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Only one of the three attempts at booking the series has come across competently, and that just doesn't cut it. I wish I cared enough to think about what they should do next year.
Chris Shore: The Bound for Glory series prelims end tonight, maybe. We were told that last week was the end, and it's that uncertainty that is the biggest problem with the series. Points systems only work when people have faith in the system, and the constant changes this year have been the biggest, though certainly not the only, problem with BFG.
Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)
Will Pruett (Total Divas): If you haven't been reading my "Diva on Divas" pieces for the site, you may not realize just how oddly entertaining Total Divas actually is. It's a mindless one hour of entertainment, but it contains some fun moments. Don't let a lot of the net negativity fool you, Total Divas is pretty great.
Jake Barnett (Daniel Bryan): After seeing a crowd go completely crazy for him in person, In think WWE would be silly not to give Daniel Bryan a title reign before WrestleMania comes around. Seeing was believing in my case because Bryan woke up a crowd that was difficult to motivate most of the night.
Zack Zimmerman (WWE): The best thing I've learned at college this semester? The Hulu Plus edit of Raw is exponentially easier to digest than the typical weekly three-hour marathon.
Darren Gutteridge (NXT): The turn of Bo Dallas will be a very interesting experiment to see play out on NXT. It will serve as a very small scale example of what a Cena heel turn could be - a heavily pushed "babyface" who the fans turned on HARD. Will those who booed Dallas cheer him now, or will the "go away" heat remain?
Chris Shore (PWX): A little shameless self-promotion here, but also some promotion for a group of talent that deserves to be seen: PWX's new TV show begins airing in the Charlotte, NC market on WCCB this Saturday at 5:00 a.m. ET. The first show is headlined by Corey Hollis vs. Rich Swann in a very good match that I had the privilege to call. I'm not sure if the show will air online, but I will be sure to provide a link if it does.
