8/23 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Aug 23, 2013 - 02:18 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): While I am overjoyed with Daniel Bryan's placement at the top of the card in WWE, the rest of the card is not in great shape. There is a lack of depth at babyface and a serious lack of compelling programs. WWE has a few weeks to start some new stories. Hopefully the creative energy continues flowing.

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): While purists may agree that Daniel Bryan's first title reign should've been more significant and lasting, there is no denying that what they're doing is telling the best story possible. For 10 years, the company has been built around a superman babyface that fans have struggled to relate with. Now, we have a scrappy underdog babyface, heaped in sympathy, that the fans love. For anyone who has put regular effort into disparaging John Cena, it can't get much better than this.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): I'm very happy that night one of Darren Young's post - coming out life went smoothly. Young didn't become camp overnight, and his sexuality wasn't mentioned because, in the kayfabe world, it wasn't relevant to his match on Raw. WWE shouldn't ignore Fred Rosser's sexual preference, nor should they overexpose it. It should be brought up when it bares mentioning, like it would in everyday society.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): I absolutely agree that it would have been better for WWE to keep from putting the title on Daniel Bryan to save that first win pop. That said, I think the difference in the pop between his first win and the one when he finally wins the title back from Orton is going to be so minor you'll never hear the difference, and they get to do it twice.

TNA

Will Pruett: Another week brings another story of cuts in TNA. I am starting to get concerned about this promotion. While some of the cuts can be seen as trimming the fat, others look to be pretty drastic. Critical as I can be of TNA, I support their existence. Hopefully this is just a dark period and not the final dark moment.

Zack Zimmerman: I'm tired of dumping on TNA, so I won't this week. I'm curious to see what comes next for AJ Styles after his sharp left turn. It came out of nowhere and his character is right back where it was before his losing streak/emo turn, but I could see this leading to a resurgence for AJ in the BFG series. I can once again see him ending up in the final four, as was expected from the start.

Chris Shore: I have no idea where to start with TNA. I look at the odd decision making in booking, the continued announcement of talent cuts, the revelation that AJ Styles might possibly not re-sign with the company, and all I see is flashing red lights and hear warning bells. It may turn out to be a false alarm ultimately and the slimming down phase breathes new life into the company. But there is no denying that things look bleak right now.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (NXT): I'm sure I won't be the only one mentioning it this week, but you should go out of your way to watch Sami Zayn vs. Antonio Cesaro from NXT. All of their matches have been excellent and they had a pretty great two out of three falls match that aired this week. If these guys are the future, then the future is looking bright for WWE.

Zack Zimmerman (ROH): I've been to an ROH TV taping and a VOD show in the past month, and I'm really impressed with the quality of the ROH product. It feels like they're taking themselves more seriously and are, in turn, presenting a more enjoyable product. While ROH has never been a company to slack on in-ring action, they had lost some luster in recent years. If you haven't checked out the product recently, I recommend giving it another shot.

Darren Gutteridge (Shakeups): I moaned a few months ago that I was suffering from a post-Mania hangover. Now, I couldn't be more excited for wrestling. Long dormant fans have been asking whats happening, saying they'll dive back in after I have given them my sales pitch. It goes to show that a good, old fashioned shake up can do wonders for even the stalest product. How about it TNA?

Chris Shore (ROH): The ROH product seems to be on the upswing once again, but at the possible expense of more hardcore fans. More and more people are finding ROH on their televisions (including my wrestling-hating brother), which is a good thing. Internally the company is thrilled that they have already reached ratings that were projected for three years out. The buzz about ROH online has diminished, and that's why I wonder if the hardcore fan is losing interest, but the company certainly appears to be hitting all of the right metrics right now.
