8/15 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Aug 15, 2013 - 06:48 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Many have been critical of John Cena mentioning the Make A Wish kid by name on Raw this week. I actually loved the moment. Cena was discussing his inspiration for wrestling and this moment felt more real to me than anything else he said. The delivery kept it from sounding self-serving and the emotion in the moment was real. There is plenty to criticize Cena about (comparing his ugly horrid shirt to the American flag), but this is not one of those things.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): I'm hoping the rodeo clowns stay in the back on Sunday and realize that ruining the Cena vs. Bryan match would be a big mistake. I understand the cash in of the briefcase and the dramatic opportunities it creates, but it sure would be nice to avoid the McMahon malarkey. That's not going to happen though.

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): This Sunday's SummerSlam lineup is one of the strongest and most potential-filled cards that WWE has presented in recent money, (I'd argue) including WrestleMania. From pre-show to main event, every match has intrigue and most have a solid amount of TV time and storylines behind them. Hopefully the quality of the show isn't overshadowed by McMahon family schmoz.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @InnominatusTTV): John Cena and Daniel Bryan delivered one hell of a hard sell for their SummerSlam Showdown. They played up the differences to their characters well, and they both made strong cases for why they need to win on Sunday. This is what the build for this match should have been all along.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): Everything about the mixed tag on Raw was bizarre. It's hard to know who exactly was at fault for the finish, but creative definitely dropped the ball by booking AJ and Big E to loose. The most bizarre part though? For once, Khali did nothing wrong!

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): Much attention has been paid to the build for CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar, especially on the mic, and rightfully so. But John Cena and Daniel Bryan deserve a mountain of credit for rising above the stench that the McMahon family has added to their match. One has to wonder if that match would be as hot as the Punk vs. Lesnar match if it hadn't been saddled with all the silly angles that really have nothing to do with the core story.

TNA

Will Pruett: You know what a company already being bogged down by faction warfare needs? Another faction. While this isn't true, it appears to be the thought process in TNA. I'm worried about this new development. I enjoy the work of Bobby Roode, Christopher Daniels, and Frankie Kazarian, but do they need to be in a faction together?

Jake Barnett: I fully expect to have a wrestler find a red button somewhere in the arena tonight that irreversibly resets all the points in the BFG series. How many loopholes are there in this thing?

Zack Zimmerman: It'll be interesting to see how TNA handles the Kurt Angle situation on-air. I assume they'll just plug Chris Sabin into the cage match. More than likely, they'll be cut some slack for such a major rift in such a major angle (no pun intended), however I'm curious to see if they address the situation directly, brush it aside, or even work it into the storyline somehow.

Ryan Kester: The stipulation added to the TNA Title match for this week's Hardcore Justice let a lot of air out of the match. Unless TNA is back in a "swerve for swerve's sake" mentality, then there's no reason for Ray to not walk away with the title rather than never getting another shot at the belt.

Chris Shore: TNA once again screwed up their Bound for Glory main event by switching the title off of the champion everyone wanted to see beat before it was time. Fortunately for them, they have an opportunity to right that tonight. Chris Sabin, for all his popularity with TNA fans, is not World Champion material, a fact that has become painfully obvious since his win. Here's hoping TNA makes the right decision tonight and puts the title back on Bully Ray and gets their main storyline back on track.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (Mick Foley): After SummerSlam this Sunday, my wife and I will be heading over to Mick Foley's comedy show in LA. I'm really interested to see how it is. I've heard nothing but good about Foley as a storyteller, so I expect great things. I'll be sure to have a report up on the site about it next week. In the meantime, if you'll be there to, feel free to say hi and buy me a drink!

Jake Barnett (ROH): Ring of Honor is really losing mind share being away from iPPV and having their TV Show being weeks behind the results that have already leaked online. I hope they work it out, but ROH seems like it's losing inertia all the time.

Zack Zimmerman (ROH): Manhattan Mayhem is set for this Sunday and the show looks stacked. The two headlining tag matches, redDRagon-Wolves and Bucks-Hooligans, will be battling to steal the show. The second round of the title tournament is providing some main event quality matches as well, with Elgin-Anderson, Steen-Strong, and Ciampa-Bennett set for the Hammerstein Ballroom. My in-person report will be up this weekend for your reading pleasure.

Ryan Kester (SummerSlam): 'm hesitantly excited to see the "Ring of Fire" match at SummerSlam between Kane and Bray Wyatt. WWE doesn't have a lot of spectacles these days that don't involve some sort of dance off. I certainly don't need to see a spot with someone getting set on fire, but I am curious to see why WWE dusted off the gimmick after so long

Darren Gutteridge (WWE 2K14): The inclusion of the "30 Years of Mania" mode in WWE 2K14 seems a logical next step from last years excellent Attitude Era mode, but 2K really need to step it up this year or next in terms of gameplay. I may be willing to offer them a pass this year due to the short game development time, but the series has been stagnating for a while, and needs new life injected into it.

Chris Shore (BJ Whitmer): It would appear that BJ Whitmer was diagnosed with the same condition that ended Edge's career, spinal stenosis, and is seeking a second opinion. I understand the desire to continue in your chosen profession, and I have zero problem with him seeking a second opinion because doctors can be wrong. That said, if the second opinion comes back the same, BJ needs to listen to the doctors and do whatever is necessary to keep him upright and walking for the rest of his life, not what keeps him in wrestling.
