8/1 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Aug 1, 2013 - 03:25 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Why does WWE always try to make their babyfaces bad stand-up comedians. We see it most clearly with John Cena and Sheamus. Right now, Dolph Ziggler is floundering in comedy land. Laughing at everything doesn't make him likable, it makes him a jerk. I don't want to cheer for a jerk.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): The McMahon's presence in the John Cena and Daniel Bryan story has me uneasy. Bryan could benefit from a more serious character, but the corporate groomed champion role always ends up as (sometimes unintentional) comedy. Fingers crossed for a more outside the box outcome.

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): I am thoroughly convinced that the incident involving Randy Orton and the disorderly fan/indie wrestler was nothing more than a publicity stunt and an attempt to increase his indie asking price. In hindsight, WWE could've brought South African developmental standout Leo Kruger on the tour and had him work a similar incident into an angle. However I would be absolutely shocked and even disappointed to see Jozi the Wrestling Machine get a spot on WWE's roster.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): Who would have thought Cody Rhodes would adapt to being a babyface better than Dolph Ziggler? While neither man has changed character (the played out "Orton face turn"), Cody is coming off as more likeable, although I'm not entirely sure why. Hopefully Rhodes capitalizes, as he has waited far too long for a chance to escape the mid-card merry-go-round.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): To me, there is absolutely no question that the Randy Orton situation in South Africa was a work. Some have asked what WWE gets from this, and while I don't have an answer directly, it is silly to believe that anything that happens overseas has to be for the US television markets. Maybe this guy is a friend of Justin Gabriel's and Justin called in a favor to get the guy a rub. Maybe this guy is connected to the people who help make these tours in South Africa happen. Whatever it was, just because there doesn't seem to be any upside for WWE in America over this incident doesn't mean there was no upside.

TNA

Will Pruett: Chris Sabin won the TNA World Championship and the main story of TNA television is all about Hulk Hogan. This is a depressing development. Sabin could tell a fun story as champion, but he needs to be an actual focus.

Jake Barnett: There is apparently another surprise coming from TNA this week. Let's hope it's a wrestler who can make a weekly contribution to the show, and not another part time act or MMA fighter that won't move the needle for them.

Zack Zimmerman: Word out of TNA is that Jeff Jarrett has been brought back into the fold and briefed on the current "restructuring" situation. I like the move for several reasons: From a business perspective, it's the most economically and structurally feasible move to make. Also, based on tweets I've seen from Jeff and Karen, he seems to have been enjoying life away from wrestling and may come back into it with a fresh mind and renewed passion.

Chris Shore: Oh please, oh please, oh please don't let the #August1Warning guy turn out to be Tito Ortiz. TNA has done a pretty good job getting some buzz for this character considering its lack of TV time, so I hope to god they don't blow it by revealing another MMA guy who will do nothing to excite fans about TNA.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): Let's be real here. ROH does not pay their talent a full time living wage and they do not create merchandise for all of them. This is why it is so puzzling to see ROH force their contracted talent to remove their t-shirts from other wrestling websites. It's rare to see a company confirm how little they care for their talent.

Jake Barnett (ROH): The ROH Title Tournament won't start on TV for a while, but early results indicate the latter rounds of the tournament could make for some great matchups. I hope ROH manages to get more than just the new champ over in the process.

Zack Zimmerman (ROH): ROH has earned their place back into a regular One Spot blurb. The tapings last Saturday showed a renewed emphasis on quality TV matches in lieu of backing off the iPPV model. Speaking of iPPVs, I've heard more people wishing that this Saturday's stacked show from Maple Leaf Gardens was available for live viewing than virtually any other show in the previous year or two of iPPVs. With the title tournament, tag team emphasis, and influx of international talent, things are looking up for the ROH product.

Darren Gutteridge (WWE): As funny as I found it initially, the fan incident with Orton in South Africa raises big questions over wrestler's security. This is a one off, sure, but the fact that the fan was given far too much time in the ring before security got to him is alarming. They're all very lucky the moron only threw one weak looking punch, instead of doing something far more serious.

Chris Shore (ROH): When you ask someone to sign a contract, you damn well better have covered all of your bases, or you do not get to complain when that person does something that falls outside of the contract. ROH's demand that wrestlers stop selling merchandise online is not based on their contractual status. Instead, the company is using their market share to bully their talent into acting like they want. That's a violation of anti-trust laws, and I hope one of the wrestlers calls them out on it.
