7/25 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).
Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Antonio Cesaro had a breakout performance on Raw this week as one of three opponents for Daniel Bryan. This was great for Bryan and I hope it ends up being great for Cesaro. Antonio is one of the most talented guys on the WWE roster and has every element WWE looks for in a star (including those major stars like Bryan are missing). It may not be immediate, but I'd love to see this match be the beginning of big things for Cesaro.
Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Forty minutes of Daniel Bryan on Monday was a ballsy approach to testing his mettle. If Daniel Bryan isn't a major part of WWE's future, they are betting o the wrong horses.
Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @InVasionZim): In 2010, I spoke with Daniel Bryan (Danielson) at one of his final indie appearances about what he expected to come of his career in WWE. One of the topics of conversation was what we both believed would be the end of Bryan's ironman reputation as a 40-60 minute worker. Three years later, Raw proved us wrong. WWE is putting a tremendous amount of both faith and TV time into Bryan and he is going above and beyond in delivering his part.
Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): It's hard to believe that the best advert for Total Divas came from a wardrobe malfunction, but it's the truth! Outside of that accident, fans were incentivized to watch the show with a vapid trailer and dull promo. I can't see how either of those things appealed to men or women, but at least Brie's nipple became a reason to re-watch the segment for some, and by association, promote the show again. Score one for tape!
Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): We keep hearing rumors about how WWE doesn't see Daniel Bryan as having any serious star potential, yet their use of him on television belies those rumors. When was the last time you saw an ROH style match on Raw that was also in the middle of a 40-minute gauntlet match? Bryan seems destined for greatness, naysayers aside.
Will Pruett: Chris Sabin becoming TNA World Champion felt like a distraction from the sad news coming out of TNA in the last week. I don't know if it was intentional or coincidental, but it feels like the least important news out of TNA this week. Hopefully the story told with Sabin will prove me wrong. I want this to succeed.
Jake Barnett: I'm very happy for Chris Sabin for overcoming his injuries and winning the TNA Heavyweight Championship. The question remains: Now what? Unless he is a transitional champion, they have a lot of work ahead of them to make Sabin feel like a big deal.
Zack Zimmerman: I know it's not fair to do, but considering the current state of TNA and the current state of Paul Heyman, one can only wonder what the wrestling landscape would look like had Dixie Carter hired Heyman instead of Bischoff and Hogan when it came time to make that fateful decision towards the end of 2009.
Chris Shore: Am I happy for Chris Sabin? Absolutely. I cannot think of a guy who has given more to a company in recent history. Does that mean I like the move? No it does not. As one of our member's said in the forum, once you punch a bully in the mouth, he stops being a bully. TNA did significant damage to Bully Ray's character, and the whole Aces and Eights storyline.
Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)
Will Pruett (ROH): Ring of Honor is in full-on reboot mode. For the first time since the original tournament, their World Championship is vacant. The large, over-arching story of the last year (SCUM) has ended. Now, ROH has an opportunity to begin again. Hopefully they will emerge from the odd graveyard of a faction war and produce compelling stories once again.
Jake Barnett (Total Divs): Holy crap was that segment on Monday awful. Between the cardboard Eva Marie and the far too animated Miz, that segment was a parody of a show that hasn't even aired yet.
Zack Zimmerman (Indies): Big weekend coming up for major indies on the East Coast. ROH's title tournament is set to kick off Saturday in Providence and despite not personally being a fan of the broken title lineage, I'm intrigued as to what stories ROH chooses to tell with this opportunity. DGUSA is also running a double shot this weekend in NYC and as always, the wrestlers on those cards are off-the-charts athletically talented and are what make that promotion so worth watching.
Darren Gutteridge (WWE Magazine): WWE magazine is 30 years old. I have brought . . . none. I never saw the appeal of buying a kayfabe magazine, as it won't offer any new storylines or character development. It is an achievement none the less, but in today's online world, I can't see it making a 40th anniversary, can you?
Chris Shore (Indies): As TNA begins to flounder, and ROH continues to show signs of gross mismanagement, I am looking to the indy circuit to produce a viable option that can bubble up and become the "next big thing." The opportunity is there, but more importantly, fans are looking for something to break them out of the current funk that all of non-WWE wrestling seems to be in.
