3/2 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Mar 2, 2013 - 05:22 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA, and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): It's hard not to stand in awe when I see a match as good as C.M. Punk vs. John Cena was on Monday night. This was one of each man's best efforts ever in the ring. For those who say John Cena can't wrestle, how do you explain the brilliance of this encounter?

Jeff Lutz (Twitter - @JeffreyDLutz): The inconsistency in WWE announcing the selection of Donald Trump to the Hall of Fame and mocking fellow right-wing nutjob Glenn Beck is striking and confusing. A Beck appearance in opposition to Jack Swagger and Zeb Colter would seemingly turn Swagger and Colter into a babyface act. It seems apparent that WWE has no idea where it is going with the angle.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): John Cena and CM Punk had one hell of a match to close Monday’s Raw. Triple H and Brock Lesnar opened up the show with a fantastic brawl. Why did so much of what was in between feel like an infomercial? I know they have a lot of time to fill on Monday’s, but there are a lot of people who don’t make TV every week that could use that time.

Zack Zimmerman (Twitter - @zzimm22): We know that Rock’s cardio isn’t quite up to par and I’m fairly positive he won’t be taking many risks. I have no doubt that the Wrestlemania main event will have the ‘big match feel’ to eclipse Punk vs. Cena from Raw, but I very seriously question if Rock vs. Cena at Mania will hold up against Monday’s gem.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @Innominatus_): Raw's main event was fantastic. It was nice to see Punk and Cena return to having such a spectacular match together and renewed my interest in seeing them have a longer feud.

Darren Gutteridge (Twitter - @Dazatheg): I find it very odd that WWE has gone with Old School Raw for next week. It is a good gimmick to spike a rating, but I can't imagine they'll need it after the great match and brawl that bookended Raw this week. Having said that, the first was a blast, and ratings aren't exactly my concern.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): Jack Swagger remains strong after his marijuana arrest last week. Whether you like Swagger's character or not, I think it's the right move. The criminal charges will turn out to be virtually nothing and there is no good reason fro WWE to use this as the time to set an example.

TNA

Will Pruett: TNA has loosely defined what Lockdown will be this year. I understand not wanting to hype a lack of cage matches, but it is hard to determine which matches will actually take place in a cage. If I'm not sure of the matches going in, will I actually want to buy the show?

Jake Barnett: Congratulations to TNA for turning a corner and finally putting some legitimate heat on the Aces and Eights. The story is shaping up nicely for a Bully Ray turn if they choose to go that way, and let’s face it, they need something big to save the angle from mediocrity.

Zack Zimmerman: We got the first AJ Styles update on Impact. I liked it, but these are my questions: Is it too similar to Bobby Roode turn? Did AJ get fat or is it just the beard? Does AJ ride the Batcycle!? Stay tuned!

Ryan Kester: I was excited to see TNA get back into live action again, but the live format brought about the old bugbear of TNA trying to cram far too much into one show. A lot of TNA's stories are better than they once were, but they are getting lost in the shuffle by the company trying to advance every story they're currently doing on one two hour block of television.

Chris Shore: I was very disappointed with Impact this week. The show needed a shot in the arm after limping out of the UK taped shows, and they didn't deliver. The stated purpose of dropping to four PPVs per year was to have better builds. TNA has utterly failed at using the extra time to promote Lockdown. There may be some mitigating factors, Jeff Hardy's inability to travel overseas for example, but it doesn't change the basic fact of the matter.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): Ring of Honor has their 11th Anniversary Show coming up this weekend. As a fringe follower of ROH, I cannot think of a single match on the card. It's sad to think the company that captured my imagination just two years ago is now producing stunningly uneventful shows.

Jeff Lutz (WWE): I needed a thesaurus and a dictionary to get through the recap of WWE's conference call on Thursday morning. The way George Barrios and Vince McMahon turn the simplest terminology into corporate-speak always has me wondering exactly what they just said. I guess words that nobody knows are WWE's way of making a so-so business quarter sound more productive.

Jake Barnett (MMA): Congratulations to Ronda Rousey for winning the first ever UFC Women’s Championship Fight. That fight was exceptional and a good first step towards UFC capitalizing on bringing more women into the sport.

Zack Zimmerman (DGUSA): Two stellar lineups are the crown jewels for WrestleCon weekend. And kudos to them, the announcement of Akira Tozawa vs. Shingo and the traditional 6-man tag has convinced me to abandon Wrestlemania Axxess in favor of the April 7th show. In addition to the April 6th show featuring Gargano vs. Shingo for the title, CIMA/FOX vs. Young Bucks for the tag titles, and Ricochet vs. Tozawa, this is shaping up to be one of the most impressive DGUSA weekends ever. Check out Johnny Gargano’s promo and Brian Kendrick’s promo leading into WrestleCon.

Ryan Kester (UFC): I'm mildly excited for UFC on FuelTV 8. The Fuel tend to deliver in a big way, and I am expecting Silva vs. Stann to be a great fight.

Darren Gutteridge : This is more of a cry for help. I have access to WWE and TNA, but, in the UK, thats all I can get without subscription. Does anyone out there know of any TV channels that run wrestling (especially ROH), or of any legal ways to see worldwide wrestling online for free? (Copyright material on YouTube is a no-no in my house). Drop me a line on Twitter if you do.

Chris Shore (ROH): ROH's 11th Anniversary Show is tonight, except it doesn't feel like an anniversary show. There has been no mention of any appearances from ROH's past (other than the Forever Hooligans of course), and the show feels like any other show. The card predicts a very good show, but I think ROH is missing an opportunity by not capitalizing on the anniversary theme, and I think it would be a mistake to make them all surprises if that's how it turns out. They need more attention and this was an opportunity for some.
