10/18 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Oct 18, 2012 - 05:00 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): The build to C.M. Punk vs. Ryback has been great. It has me on the edge of my seat waiting to see the match. The only real issue I have with it is the structure that will be surrounding the ring. Hell in a Cell should be a feud ender, not the beginning. I'm sure the match will entertain, but this is a major failure in the storytelling department. Next year, I hope WWE rethinks having the Cell be a date on the calendar.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Ryback is an interesting test case for WWE. I've always been under the impression, perhaps misguidedly, that personalities were half the battle or more in determining who makes their way to the top of the card. Ryback has yet to speak more than a few words. He has also yet to have a match on television last any serious length of time. It will be interesting to see if the WWE Title match on the PPV is the caliber people have come to expect. If Ryback wins, what does he say? What is there left to feed him?

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): After seeing a ROH iPPV, a TNA PPV, and a Monday Night Raw back to back to back, I thought for sure I would be too burned out to enjoy WWE's Main Event. Yet WWE surprised me and put on a better hour of wrestling that I saw in all of the other "bigger" shows combined. We complain a lot around here about crappy wrestling, and rightfully so. So I feel compelled to say that this week's WWE Main Event was top notch programming and made me a fan again.

TNA

Will Pruett: Devon? Really? Devon! That is the big payoff that TNA creative expected people to pay for. That, combined with the deluge of former WWE stars winning championships, show that TNA is abandoning the movement that brought them Bobby Roode, James Storm, and Austin Aries and returning to the philosophy of pushing anyone with a WWE pedigree.

Jake Barnett: I'm not sure what to think of Jeff Hardy with the TNA Title. Can you really place the declining ratings of Impact on Austin Aries' shoulders? If anything, the black cloud following Hulk Hogan, the schizophrenic storytelling, and the albatross that is the stalled Aces and Eights angle were the most detrimental to the overall product. I hope they give Aries another shot.

Chris Shore: On the flip side of Main Event, I had very high hopes for Bound for Glory, and TNA didn't get close. There were several enjoyable matches, but storylines either fell apart or stunk. Perhaps the most frustrating part is that none of it makes any sense. TNA has been steadily improving on the creative side, not as fast as I had hoped, but still an upward trend. This show was a big crash and end to that trend. Hopefully they can right the ship tonight.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): Is reigniting the Kevin Steen and El Generico feud the best thing for Ring of Honor? I'm excited about it, but it does seem like a step back rather than a step forward. That said, I'm absolutely fine with one of my favorite indie wrestlers being given another opportunity. El Generico returning to ROH will be a lot of fun to watch.

Jake Barnett (ROH): With Cornette out and Delirious in as head booker, I'm looking forward to seeing the changes tonthe ROH product. The knock against Cornette was that he was booking a product that belonged in a different era. I think ROH could find success if it becomes a modern product, but that will need to include modern production. If the product looks like somebody smeared vaseline on an 8mm projector, I can't see interest in the product increasing rapidly.

Chris Shore (Indy): I just saw where another local group here in NC is putting on iPPV. As this technology improves and becomes cheaper, more and more indy groups are going to take the plunge. That begs the question, what's the next innovation in getting your product to the masses? There are a lot of groups using different media platforms out there. I cannot wait until one of them finds the best platform and starts to soar. (By the way, check out CWF in their first iPPV at rumble.cwf247.com.
