9/19 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Sep 19, 2012 - 08:30 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): The announcing this week was an absolute treat. JBL and Michael Cole have a natural chemistry that elevates the entire product. It's no shock that Night of Champions felt important. The voices supporting it treated it that was.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): The commentary booth covered Jerry Lawler's absence in grand fashion, bringing back JBL for Night of Champions and Raw, and adding Jim Ross to the Raw broadcast. JBL has excellent chemistry with Cole, and I thought the three man booth on Monday did a wonderful job of giving a mediocre show some big time atmosphere. The PPV broadcast on Sunday was also greatly improved by JBL's presence in the booth. WWE missed having a smart heel commentator in a bad way, and JBL did a great job of reminding us of that fact.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): Raw this week was an absolute bore, The current format isn't working with three hours. I felt like an episode of Superstars was spliced in the middle of a less than stellar two-hour Raw.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): As a guy who does wrestling play-by-play work, I was in hog heaven Monday night when Jim Ross, JBL, and a motivated Michael Cole took to the headsets to call Raw. Jim Ross is a legend, JBL was able to do what he wanted, and Michael Cole proved he could be a good commentator again if he just dumped the silly and tired gimmick. I learned a ton Monday night, gentlemen. Thank you.

TNA

Will Pruett: Jeff Hardy vs. Austin Aries is officially happening. The challenge is now to make this match feel like the dream match it could be. TNA has a long uphill battle to fight as many will judge this against their own mental version of the James Storm and Bobby Roode feud. Hardy and Aries are exceptionally capable, but creative has to be able to get it done as well.

Jake Barnett: Most of Impact last week was pretty good. Jeff Hardy and Austin Aries are headed to a showdown at BFG, and that's great news. The backstage authority figure bonanza was downright embarrassing with its cheese ball sound effects and dramatic camera cuts. Where was dramatic chipmunk when we needed him?

Ryan Kester: So far, I'm not excited about the direction Bound For Glory is headed. UI was hoping for something better than a babyface vs. babyface match in the title picture and Aces and Eights is losing steam with me.

Chris Shore: I am very much looking forward to my first live TNA event this Friday. This is really only the fifth or sixth time since I started writing for the site that they have been close enough to see, and all the other times had some sort of conflict. TNA always travels well, and they are still small enough to go out of their way to make fans feel appreciated. Or so I've heard. I'll let you all know my thoughts Saturday morning.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): Well, Ring of Honor had another iPPV issue on Saturday. Why are people still buying these shows? It can't be because Rhino is lighting the world on fire. It can't be because they actually expect to see them. It time to break the habit and wake ROH up. I'm done with them.

Jake Barnett (UFC): It wasn't that long ago that UFC appeared to be really on the cusp of breaking into a new stratosphere of success, but due to the very real risks associated with the sport, injuries can make or break fight cards. UFC has been cooling off in terms of television ratings and PPV purchases for a while now. The occasional major fight will still draw fans back in, but overall it feels like UFC has been in a holding pattern for some time now. If Silva vs. St. Pierre happens at some point, I think it would behoove UFC to load up that card and try to ignite a new surge in popularity.

Ryan Kester (UFC): I'm on the fence about ordering UFC 152 this weekend. The main event feels completely slapped together and the rest of the card isn't exactly jumping out at me as unskippable.

Chris Shore (CHIKARA): My one shot here will be my last shot on CHIKARA's King of Trios. I watched Twitter today as person after person watched the tournament as it is now available for streaming at Smart Mark Video. What I saw, was people who experienced it the same way I did. That's impressive, because I worried that not being in that crowd would leave people disappointed. I've been thinking about this for several days now, and I feel I can honestly say that I have never personally seen a better three-day card put together. I don't even know if I've heard of one. You need to see this folks. It's just plain good.
