8/23 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indie wrestling
Aug 23, 2012 - 03:35 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): My favorite part of Raw this week was the show-closing segment between C.M. Punk and John Cena. While some feel it is too soon to return to that feud, I feel that the timing is perfect. Who is left to challenge Punk after this long reign? Who is left for John Cena to face? At this moment, this battle of ideologies is exactly what WWE needs.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): John Cena's promo confused me on Monday. How can a man claim that the respect fans give him does not rely in Championships, and yet claim another man has to beat him in a title match to earn his respect?

Mark Gessner (Twitter - @MarkGessner): Dolph Ziggler truly has come into his own and is doing the best work of his career. His work in the ring is top 3 in the business. Can anyone name the last match that he has had that was not entertaining? Nope, me neither. And, he has really come into his own on the mic. His locker room promo with Vickie prior to the match was phenomenal and it put over the importance of winning Monday's match with Chris Jericho. Small nitpick was him saying, "I'm going to win this for us," to Vickie. That would have been the perfect opportunity for him to get away from Vickie and go out on his own. Vickie has been excellent at generating heat for him for the past few years, but at this point, he's more than good enough to make it on his own. If you haven't yet, watch his weekly YouTube show, "WWE Download," to see the natural charisma he has. Plus, the lucky son of a bitch dated Amy Schumer. Lucky bastard.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): Punk solidified his turn on Monday night, and I was left feeling a bit perplexed on why WWE went with a slow burn turn. There's only so many chances to create a big turn moment with a guy that is that over, and WWE let this one slip right by.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): WWE proved once again with John Cena and CM Punk on Monday that they have the creative chops to do great stories, going so far as to pique my interest in a match I feel is happening too soon. The problem is, the spent the two hours and 45 minutes before that final segment proving that they don't care most of the time. Cena vs. Punk may be epic. Punk vs. Rock could shatter records. Cena vs. Rock II could kill a thousand people from excitement. But eventually, those gusy will go away. And then what do you have?

TNA

Will Pruett: James Storm seems to be back on the babyface path after being attacked by Aces and Eights. While many see this as a way to throw fans off the scent of Storm, more will see it as a reason to rally behind Storm. I truly believe that the plan is for Storm to lead a babyface force into Bound for Glory against the Aces and Eights. It isn't the main event that he could have had against Bobby Roode, but it is a great spot for him.

Jake Barnett: The Aces and Eights are in a match this week, which surprises me because I thought this storyline would burn quite a bit slower. I hope TNA doesn't end up giving too much away, and because that faction has nothing but mystery going for it.

Mark Gessner: The A.J. Styles and Claire story needs to end as soon as possible. It is the one glaring dark spot on an otherwise generally entertaining show from top-to-bottom. An "if I lose I'll admit the child is mine without a paternity test," might be one of, if not the dumbest stipulations for a match that I have ever heard. It is beyond "suspend your disbelief" bad. It is honestly the only significant gripe that anyone can make since the creative overhaul and move to live format. Just find a way to end this terrible angle and move on.

Ryan Kester: I am happy to see Aces and Eights turn on James Storm so TNA can get away from undermining his integrity. TNA has done damage to Storm over the past several weeks.

Chris Shore: With Austin Aries retaining the title and Bobby Roode not getting another chance the BFG series had already taken on a different light. With the additional issue of Pope's injury, the BFG series could suddenly have more spark than ever if TNA plays this right.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (Preachy): At SummerSlam on Sunday, I experienced one of my biggest pet peeves as a wrestling fan: wrestling fans. All of them are not bad. In fact, most of them are great people and super awesome. There were a few fans behind me screaming out all of the internet smark-dom that they could manage, including screaming that wrestling is staged. Would you walk by a bunch of kids in line to see Santa at a mall? This is the equivalent of that action.

Jake Barnett (Women's MMA): All hail Ronda Rousey and her arm bar. She might be in the top 5 most exciting fighters in all of MMA. I hope the Cyborg fight happens, the just so Ronda can expose her as the fraud she is.

Mark Gessner (UFC): Dana White has confirmed that there will be a new division added to the UFC soon. Speculation is that it will either be a 115 pound division, 225 pound division, or a woman's division. In my opinion, and from a logic standpoint, a 225 pound division makes the most sense. UFC has really yet to establish the newest division at Flyweight (125 pounds), so adding 115 would not make much sense. Aside from Ronda Rousey, there is no real name value in woman's MMA and Dana has said that the depth of competition was his biggest holdup in bringing woman into the UFC.

A 225 division makes the most sense. Currently, after the cut-off for Light Heavyweight at 205 pounds, the heavyweight division can have up to a sixty pound weight difference at the time of weigh-ins. That is a ridiculous disparity. That also rejuvenates various fighters who hover around 240 pounds who are not on Junior Dos Santos' level or have lost to him, or even JDS himself who weighs in around there could drop to the 225 division. It will be interesting to see when and what the announcement is going to be.

Ryan Kester (UFC): I was eagerly anticipating UFC 151. While I thought Jones will walk out of the PPV still the Light Heavyweight Champion, I felt Henderson would give him his greatest test to date. If Jones had been blasted by a right from Henderson, the world would be able to see just what type of chin Jones has.

Chris Shore (ROH): The Ring of Honor World Champion says he thinks the product is good. I respectfully disagree. The talent is there. Guys like Mike Bennett, Tomasso Ciampa, and Michael Elgin are ready for the big time. The powers that be need to wake up and see what they have available before these guys are gone.
