7/18 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).
Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): As much as I have criticized the product in the past few months, I am all sorts of excited for the 1,000th episode of Raw. WWE has built this show up and it might be the most loaded episode of Raw in history. Personally, I can't wait to see C.M. Punk vs. John Cena, which was a pleasant surprise announcement at the end of this week's Raw. This will be a very fun show, regardless of if you've enjoyed WWE in the last few months or not.
Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Raw 1000 is a loaded show. It's amazing that they think they can fit it all into 3 hours. It's hard to predict what the quality of the show will be given the obscene amount of talent they have booked, but I guess it's a good problem to have. i hope they use it to spotlight some young guys instead of letting the heavy hitters of the past dominate the show. Nostalgia is good in the right doses, but overboard is a killer.
Mark Gessner (Twitter - @MarkGessner): Dolph Ziggler had probably his best night on the mic in his career on Monday. His promo on Jericho said what we have all thought since he came back in the beginning of this year. Add on top of the promo that the match between Ziggler and Jericho at most likely Summerslam should be phenomenal. For those of you who haven't seen Ziggler Z! True Long Island Story, WWE Download, or even Twitter, he has a natural charisma that hopefully winning the Money in the Bank will allow him to show.
Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): A Chris Jericho babyface turn and marriage to Dolph Ziggler is enough to make me a tad giddy. Jericho has always enjoyed putting guys over, and his Teflon coating allows him to do it with ease time and again. Ziggler needs a good strong program to make him a bona fide star, and Jericho is a guy that can give it to him.
Will Pruett: The Aces and Eights mystery has me pretty intrigued. I like it as a just-below-the-top story. It ropes a few top acts into a worthwhile story and gives them direction, while providing a hook for viewers to learn more about this rogue group week by week. TNA is doing a lot right at this moment and this story has a chance to add to that.
Jake Barnett: There is a lot to like about TNA right now. Last Thursday's show was very entertaining. The two things I'm hoping for is the return of Bobby Roode's confidence and the merciful end of this drug baby storyline. Drama is good in Pro Wrestling, but that is the wrong kind of drama for a wrestling show.
Mark Gessner: Congratulations to Austin Aries on becoming the new TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Aries has everything you look for in a wrestler with his charisma, ring work, promos, and the illustrious "it" factor. While I think the title will be back on Bobby Roode in the near future, Aries is someone you could build a company around.
Chris Shore: Is TNA cursed? I ask with absolutely no sarcasm or humor in my mouth. TNA was a train wreck for a long, long time. The train wreck was replaced by boring. And then, just when boring was starting to give way to good, Viacom and DirecTV have a falling out. Granted there are still a ton of people who can see Impact Wrestling every week, but I don't know that I have ever seen a company with such bad luck.
Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)
Will Pruett (Indies): Why do people say "Indy" wrestling? No other genre of entertainment spells indie that way. What makes us think that wrestling is more important than music? I'm calling for a revolution in the wrestling world! It is time! Indy wrestling is dead. Long live Indie Wrestling!
Jake Barnett (ROH): The Tag Title tournament is shaping up nicely. If you are going to talk about tag team wrestling in 2012, ROH is the first place that has to come to mind. The situation regarding ANX and Kenny King was a blow to the confidence of ROH fans, but in the end it's about the wrestling and I think this tournament will deliver.
Mark Gessner (UFC): Chael Sonnen lost last Saturday to his biggest opponent throughout his entire career, himself. While respect for Anderson is due based on how few, if any, fighters are on his level, Sonnen proved in the first round that he is. Yet again though, he lost due to stupid mistake. In the first fight, it was him being oblivious to Silva having wrist control for two minutes, which allowed him to lock in the triangle choke. Saturday it was attempting an ill-advised spinning backlist for I believe the first time in his career. While some question the legality of Silva's knee (http://i45.tinypic.com/azdr20.gif), Sonnen should not have been in that position to take the knee.
Chris Shore (CHIKARA): I am really hoping things work out right and I am able to go because King of Trios looks to be a great event. Only ten trios have been announced, but the inclusion of the "Faces of Pain" trio of Warlord, Barbarian, and, coming out of retirement, Meng put me over the top. I'm not sure if the weekend will be an iPPV or not, but you should definitely buy it if it is. (Also, Will Pruett is a nerd.)
