6/6 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Jun 6, 2012 - 08:53 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): When people ask me why I watch wrestling, I want to show them the C.M. Punk vs. Kane match from Raw and the aftermath of it. Kane, Punk, Daniel Bryan, and A.J. all told a great story that made their upcoming triple threat suddenly make sense. When people ask me why I watch wrestling, I hope and pray they never see the final segment of Raw. It was one of the most embarrassing things I have ever watched as a fan. It wasn't funny, it was pathetic.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): The C.M. Punk, Daniel Bryan and Kane storyline continues to be the most entertaining thing going in WWE right now, in no small thanks to AJ and her contributions to the story at large. This may be the most effective use of a WWE Diva in a non wrestling role in years. I hope this becomes a blueprint, because with the lack of effort the divas usually get creatively, it's nice to see a female presence on the show in other ways that make big storyline impacts.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): While I cannot say the same about the main story line in WWE, the WWE Championship picture has been exciting as of late. CM Punk, Dniel Bryan, Kane, and to a significant degree, AJ, have done a marvelous job of telling a convincing story. I still look forward to a proper build featuring just the two ROH alum, but for now I have been entertained by what the parties have produced.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): The post-Wrestlemania slump has settled in. The stories aren't God awful. In fact, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and AJ are a lot of fun to watch. But even the forums seem sleepy. There's no fire right now for wrestling as a whole. That's a shame. Hopefully some promotion somewhere can find that spark we need to start a fire since WWE doesn't seem interested in doing it.

TNA

Will Pruett: The more things change, the more they stay the same. I was excited for TNA's live debut, riding high after a great couple of weeks of Impact, and I was sorely disappointed. It isn't that this was not the best Impact ever, but they just didn't capture me. Everything on the show felt flat. Even the good wrestling was not enough to overcome the poor storytelling. I'm already drafting my disappointed blog for the moment when Sting wins the World Title once again.

Jake Barnett: Will Pruett and I spent an entire hour talking about TNA's disappointing live Impact show last thursday on our special TNA edition of the Dot Net Countdown. If you haven't listened, I would recommend you do, as it's difficult to express the disappointment writ large with that show in such a small space. I would say that the only direction from here is up, but I know that isn't true.

Ryan Kester: While I may not be high on the Gut Check thus far, I enjoyed Joey Ryan's retort via a YouTube video. There is talent there, and I look forward to what Ryan and TNA do in the future.

Chris Shore: The first live Impact Wrestling did not impress me, but it did not stink either. I have watched it a few more times and I think the promotion is doing a good job of "trying" to be big, and I mean that as a compliment. The pay off is going to come if TNA can produce television that matches the level of intensity of how they are presenting it.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): The verbal exchange between Davey Richards and Kevin Steen on this past week's show may have included the best promo of Davey's career. This exchange actually excited me for this rematch when I thought that Richards would never interest me again. Steen as the anti-hero champion is an interesting experiment that I look forward to seeing develop. The first real show after Border Wars was a success.

Jake Barnett (ROH): Kevin Steen, Davey Richards and Jim Cornette managed to pull together a very interesting segment to sell the ROH Title rematch coming up at Best in the World. I'm looking forward to that contest, and I hope ROH is up to the challenge of fixing their production and streaming problems for that show. Once that is complete, the work begins in improving the announcing and the booking that is still relying to heavy on 1980s wrestling conventions. Wayne Gretzky's father once told him, "Don't go to the puck, go to where the puck is going to be." I think ROH needs to think about that for a moment and try to be the next trend in wrestling instead of trying to relive the glory days of its primary booker.

Ryan Kester (UFC): Make no mistake about it, Jon Jones screwed up royally when he drank and decided to step into a car. However, it's been refreshing to see someone admit they screwed up and I have nothing but respect for how Jones has been handling himself since that error in judgement.

Chris Shore (PWX): Congratulations to PWX for signing their regional television deal for upper South Carolina. Yes, I am hosting the show, but my ego aside, it's good to see the Carolina wrestling scene continuing to grow each and every year. This used to be a hot bed of professional wrestling, and it's great to be a part of perhaps that happening again.
