5/24 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).
Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): There isn't much more to say than I already said in my blog this past Tuesday. WWE is on autopilot. The Big Show and Cena story is on life support, and it's time to pull the plug.
Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): It's a crying shame that WWE has two characters that are really coming into their own that can both go and yet WWE is focused on a rehash from three years back.
Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): I think it's time we stop calling the WWE Creative Team "creative." We aren't getting very much out of them, and what we are getting is light years from creative in almost every way. That's terrible for us fans, but it's even more terrible for a talent roster that seems to get more and more talented, and yet can't show it, every day.
Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): The current direction at the top of the card is thoroughly disappointing. On Sunday, John Cena and John Laurinaitis had an atrocious match that not only bored fans, but also compromised the core of who John Cena is. This direction needs to be toned down or stopped immediately.
Jake Barnett: While WWE has been backing up to the pay window for a few weeks, TNA has managed to deliver an entertaining couple of episodes of Impact. If TNA can keep the momentum going and perhaps put a few more of the antiques back in the curio cabinet, they could take advantage of WWE's Q2 doldrums.
Ryan Kester: It's make or break time for TNA and the Open Fight Night concept. Last month, TNA debuted the idea with a lackluster presentation, so they need to up their game if they intend to have this idea attract extra viewers.
Chris Shore: Just when you think TNA has their head screwed on straight, the Brooke Hogan announcement reminds everyone that Dixie Carter has left the running of her business to a couple of egomaniacs who seem more interested in developing some sort of personal lineage than what is best for business.
Will Pruett: Impact Wrestling was the best wrestling show on TV last week. The next few weeks will be very important for TNA with them going live starting next Thursday. If you're not watching TNA, start now. The product, while not without its frustrations, is more enjoyable than it has been in years.
Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)
Jake Barnett (ROH): Kevin Steen's first promo as ROH champion was well done, and you can't help but get the impression that the companies survival rests entirely on his shoulders. It's a tough position to put him in, but he is the most interesting character they have, and they are in desperate need of a creative spark. ROH has had a rough couple of months both technically and creatively.
Ryan Kester (UFC): UFC 146 is this weekend and it's time for UFC's heavyweight division to either deliver a memorable night or continue to exist in a state of flux. I, for one, will be interested in seeing of Junior Dos Santos can break the streak of one and done UFC Heavyweight Champions with a successful defense this Saturday.
Chris Shore (UFC): Jon "Bones" Jones arrest for DUI is more than just a stupid move on the fighter's part. UFC needs to build stars, especially with the exit of Brock Lesnar, and Jones was the best candidate for the job due to his amazing skills and young age. This doesn't automatically exclude him from that position, but he is going to have to show serious contrition and a willingness to take the beating the press will give him.
Will Pruett (ROH): If you turned on ROH television this past week, you have no idea that the ROH Championship now rests with the number one heel (or babyface) in the company, Kevin Steen. After so many years of wrestling TV following up a pay-per-view the very next night, waiting two or three weeks for ROH TV to catch up feels like an eternity.
