3/22 Dot Net One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Mar 22, 2012 - 05:48 PM

Welcome to the Dot Net One Shots. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): It feels like WrestleMania season and I must compliment WWE on their restraint on Monday night. Last year we were all amazed by the penultimate edition of Raw, but we're underwhelmed by the episode right before. WWE delivered a solid Raw that built nicely, but left plenty of room for a crescendo next week. All of their eggs are in next week's basket. Let's hope they deliver.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Taker, Michaels and Triple H delivered another great promo on Monday with few wasted words or expressions. They seem to have found a tone and delivery that works for all of them, and it has been a treat to watch for everyone. I wish they had found that with The Rock and Cena, but so far for this viewer it feels like two guys selling themselves, and not necessarily the match they are involved in. I'm glad the storyline with Jericho and Punk has gone off so well, as that really has replaced Rock and Cena for me as the second most exciting feud heading into the show.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): WWE has manage to keep a good rotational focus on the top three storylines for this year's WrestleMania, but of the three The Rock vs. John Cena feels like the angle that has grabbed my attention the least. Two weeks ago it would have been right up there, but WWE has held back on the focus on the pair the past few weeks. They really have a hard sell ahead of them for Monday's Raw and I am sure they have something in mind that will work, but I did not expect for such a final push to feel so critical this far down the stretch.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): The major news this week, that has been disputed by WWE, concerns WWE's developmental territory, FCW. Whatever the actual story ends up being, one thing is clear: WWE needs their developmental territory, and needs to expand it. WWE is two injuries away from complete panic, and they need to begin grooming more stars to create a safety net.

TNA

Will Pruett: What exactly was the ending of Victory Road with Bobby Roode assaulting Dixie Carter? Was it tasteless? Was it an attempt to trend on the Twitter machine? Was it a tactic to make the champion look strong? Was it supposed to serve any real purpose? I cannot figure this out. I tend to think it was all of these things except for purpose serving.

Jake Barnett: I can't say I really enjoyed the finish to the Victory Road PPV on Sunday. Per TNA's organizational bylaws, they always have to punctuate otherwise good matches with finishes that make me wish a storm was blowing over and my DirecTV would just fade out during the worst parts of the show. That being said, there were many good performances at Victory Road, but I wish the payoff moments that stick with viewers didn't leave such a bad taste in mouth.

Ryan Kester: Victory Road last weekend featured some very solid wrestling, but I still left the show underwhelmed. There's certainly signs that TNA is attempting to get on the right track, but it' time for things like heel vs.heel matches to end and it would be wonderful to see the main event end in a decisive manner. TNA has a great set of resources at their disposal, but creatively they are still falling flat.

Chris Shore: TNA is doing a better job of telling stories, but their characters are still flat and boring. That has to be the next thing the new creative team works on. This is a personality driven industry, and right now TNA has the least compelling personalities in the business. I'm not sure turning Booby Roode in a misogynist is the way to go, but that guy needs something to make me want to watch him.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): WrestleMania weekend's shows look like a cluster of awfulness. I'm not discussing the work in the ring, but the work out of it. Stories are not logically structured in ROH and that is a major problem. What is the point of the "Blind Destiny" concept other than to make sure we don't get Davey Richards vs. Kevin Steen? Remember when Davey was the most over act in ROH and they took too long to give him the title? Kevin Steen is in the same situation now.

Jake Barnett (ROH): ROH has some interesting stuff coming up WrestleMania weekend. I'm really interested in seeing Lance Storm take on Mike Bennett, and I think Steen vs. Generico will be a ton of fun. The Main Event should feature more amazing athleticism, and I hope they manage to work a pace that allows some drama to unfold and some selling in the match. That has been my pet peeve with a lot of the ROH product, and I hope they can dial it back from ludicrous speed to maybe just ridiculous speed. No need to go plaid, guys.

Ryan Kester (UFC): UFC on Fuel TV is still a ways away, but the card is an intriguing one. Gustaffson vs. Silva and Stann vs. Sakara should both make for memorable fights, and I cannot wait to see what we get.

Chris Shore (ROH): There are five words Jim Cornette needs to understand right now, because it is the only way to save this company: Kevin Steen, World Heavyweight Champion.
