2/15 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Feb 15, 2012 - 08:29 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): The Rock and John Cena are continuing their Twitter slap fight. Apparently the goal is to convince me they have some personal animosity between each other, but all it does is make their upcoming match seem like a petty waste of time and not the biggest match of all time. I think most fans have forgotten why this match is happening. From what I can gather, The Rock dislikes Cena because he may or may not have a vagina and Cena wants Rock to work full time again. Wow. That sure sounds like WrestleMania to me.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): Kane and John Cena continue to stink up the joint on Raw. I won't say it has anything to do with their individual performances, but the way this story is written puts them in a position to fail. Bad camera edits, poor secondary character performances by Eve and Ryder, and B-Movie cliches aren't helping matters.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): Sports entertainment was out in full force on Monday and we got a solid example for how important crowd reaction is to a wresting product. I can honestly say that the Kane, Cena, Ryder, and Eve soap opera would have annoyed me considerably if it wasn't for the San Diego crowd being behind it one-hundred percent.

Mark Gessner (Twitter - @MarkGessner): With Shawn Michaels now advertised for Raw in Boston and Philly in March, all signs point towards him being special referee for HHH vs. Taker at Wrestlemania. HBK and HHH were very entertaining in their segment on Monday and the story has been told very well so far.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): I am truly baffled by the Chris Jericho character in WWE. And not baffled in the good way like when he was trolling everyone, but baffled in the bad way where I watch it play out each week now and think, "What in the hell is going on?" Much like his first return showed the limitations of his Y2J character, this return has highlighted the flaws in his "talk slowly and use big words" heel.

TNA

Will Pruett: Vince Russo is gone. This could be a good situation, but it may not be. There was a major shakeup at the end of last year with Bruce Prichard taking over creative and shows have still been up and down since then. I'm happy to see that a major roadblock to wrestling progress has been removed in Russo, but this is not the solution many think it is. I'm optimistic and excited, but also a little cautious.

Jake Barnett: Well, internet wrestling fans everywhere can stop burning effigies of Vince Russo every Thursday, as it appears he has parted ways with TNA. I guess this means the misogyny in TNA will be dialed back from 11 all the way back to 8, and hopefully we will see a clean finish when it is warranted. I just hope that he isn't who Johnny Ace has been texting on Raw.

Ryan Kester: It's the beginning of a new era in TNA creatively, but the company will continue to be held back if so much of the show is devoted to idolizing Garett Bischoff.

Mark Gessner: Dave Lagana replacing Vince Russo on creative is probably the best possible move if the company could not come to terms with Paul Heyman. Based on his #IWantWrestling campaign on twitter and his "Formerly Creative" podcasts, he clearly has a love, passion, and mind for the business. Hopefully he puts a concentration on wrestling and moves aside from the convoluted storylines we've become accustomed to from TNA.

Chris Shore: Ding dong the wicked witch is dead and all that, but now TNA no longer has an excuse to suck. It was easy to forgive the show when you stopped to consider the guy creating it couldn't write his way out of a wet paper bag, but now that isn't the case. If the show still sucks—and we do have to give Lagana some time to put his fingerprints on the show before passing judgment—then things suddenly look very dire for the Florida group.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): ROH apparently does not care all that much about their 10th anniversary show. Booking a tag team main event when they need an era-defining singles match for their world title is a complete mistake. They should be celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their world championship. One top of this, two triple threat world title matches will happen on WrestleMania weekend. This feels like the "Fatal Four-way" show for ROH. The product is not exciting right now and it really should be.

Jake Barnett (UFC): Nick Diaz popped positive for Marijuana last week, and I can't really bring myself to care. I've yet to hear a compelling reason why they even test for it, as it is utterly preposterous to consider it a performance enhancing drug. It will result in fines and a suspension, which puts the UFC in a silly position. Will they start punishing people for DUI's?

Ryan Kester (UFC): Jake Ellenberger vs. Diego Sanchez on UFC on FUELtv is going to be a hell of a fight. It will be interetsing to see what sort of ratings the UFC can pull in on the fledgling network, especially consdiering the lacking cards that have taken place on UFC on Fox and UFC on FX.

Mark Gessner (UFC): While only being out for a day, UFC Undisputed 3 has lived up to the hype. The career mode is improved with mini games to build up stats, the gameplay is much more realistic with emphasis on combos rather than just loading up for one big strike, and the graphics are amazing. Great game so far

Chris Shore (EVO): My first live event was Starrcade 1983, a Flair for the Gold where Ric Flair defeated Harley Race in the cage for the World Heavyweight Championship. I was there the night Nikita Koloff turned and formed the Super Powers with Dusty Rhodes. I have seen live events that I will carry to my grave. I saw another one last month at EVO 8 2012. If any of my writings have ever made you consider checking this company out, this is the time. Head over to EvoOnDemand.com to watch it right now.
