In case you missed it, this column is taking the place of “Pros and Cons.” I have received a lot of positive feedback for this new column and appreciate it. You can catch the first installment of “Buy or Sell” by clicking here.
Today’s Rundown: C.M. Punk vs. Batista, Summerslam main event, Chris Jericho, Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix, D-Lo Brown, Young champions do jobs, The Sandman, Jenny McCarthy
Raw main event of C.M. Punk vs. Batista: I am selling this because in my opinion, it was a no win situation. If Punk would have defeated Batista, Batista would have been buried. If Punk defeated Batista due to interference by Kane, JBL, or anyone else, people would then complain that Punk did not win clean. If Batista would have won the match in any way, shape or form, fans would have been outraged. The finish sucked but it was logical. WWE booked themselves into a corner with this one.
Potential multi-person World Title match at Summerslam: I am definitely selling this, not only because multi-person matches have been done to death, but because I prefer one on one matches. On top of that, Kane and JBL will likely be in the match and neither one of them is a top guy.
Chris Jericho: I am buying Jericho because he can do no wrong right now. His promo last night was awesome. Watching his cold, callous, and ruthless attitude develop over the past few months has been fantastic. I really hope he and Shawn Michaels have a match of the year candidate at Summerslam. I also hope Lance Cade and Paul London are elevated as a part of this feud.
Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix: I am buying this as well. Before last night, Marella had zero credibility in the ring and Phoenix was out of the Women’s Championship picture. This romance is something that the fans can (and will) get behind. Santino can talk for Beth and Beth can toughen Santino up. Not everyone can be in a title picture, so the key is making those people interesting and WWE succeeded in that here.
D-Lo Brown returns: I am buying his return. I was never a huge fan of his during his previous run, but he is a good worker with a good reputation. Plus, he worked hard to make his appearance last night something to remember, which the fans appreciated. Ricky Ortiz and Braden Walker did not do the same thing in their first appearances. I am not sure if I liked the fact that Michael Cole took the surprise factor out of his return. On one hand, it is unrealistic for an announcer not to know who is going to be on the show but on the other hand, it would have been nice for Cole to sell the return as more of a surprise.
Young champions get pinned: Kofi Kingston was pinned last night by Paul Burchill. John Cena destroyed Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes in about a minute. In the mixed tag match, Burchill and Katie Lea needed to win if those feuds were to continue, so Kingston or Mickie James would have had to do the job, so I am buying that one. I am selling the latter because one wrestler should never take out the tag team champions by himself.
Inviting the Sandman to my birthday party: I am buying this. I would rather not have the police involved, but I am sure he would challenge me for being the life of the party.
Jenny McCarthy and Generation Rescue: I am buying of course. For all of the questionable things done by WWE, they shine in these areas. From their work with the troops, to their involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to this, WWE should be commended. Sure, they make sure to toot their own horn, but they deserve the praise.
As always, your feedback is welcome and appreciated. I can be reached by sending an email to dotnetrich@gmail.com.
