Twilling's WWE "ECW on Syfy" Hitlist: Chris Jericho vs. Christian, Tiffany, Jericho, and Regal backstage, New number on contender named, midcard feuds, Matt Striker, overall show
By Rich Twilling Oct 21, 2009 - 12:00 PM

WWE “ECW on Syfy” Hits

Christian vs. Chris Jericho: This was a nice treat for those fans who are loyal by tuning in every week. Christian and Jericho should be main eventing pay-per-views, but an unadvertised main on the third most important show will have to do. The match itself was very good and was fifteen minutes of fantastic storytelling. The wrong two guys are going the hour on Sunday.

Tiffany, Jericho, and William Regal segments: It was great and smart to have Jericho involved before the opening video. It gave those on the fence a reason to stay tuned in. Tiffany was very good in her segments as well as the no nonsense, not going to take crap from anybody, general manager of the show. Regal was his usual entertaining self too.

New number one contender named: I like when a match or series of matches determines the number one contender for a championship. The match itself between Yoshi and Ryder was good, but not great. However, I love that these were the two getting the chance. We’ve seen Ryder challenge Christian, but he is still new at the top of the card. Yoshi is brand new and could provide a nice spark.

Midcard feuds: I mentioned in my report that it was a challenge to make feuds interesting with only one championship. Well, with Shelton Benjamin vs. Sheamus and Hurricane Helms vs. Paul Burchill, they have succeeded. These men have legitimate problems with each other and aren’t just wrestling random matches against each other.

Matt Striker: I haven’t praised him in awhile and he deserves praise. I remember the disappointment I felt when nobody mentioned the history of Jericho and Christian. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, Striker chimed in. By the way, did anyone else notice Striker awkwardly changing his prediction for the seven-on-seven match at Bragging Rights? Somebody was in his ear.

Rosa Mendes: I’m not sure what she is going to do on this show, but I like that they had a short segment with her, reminding us she was on the roster now after the diva trade.

Overall show: This was one of the best ECW (WWE) broadcasts I have seen. Great main event, a new number one contender, good progression of other feuds, and solid backstage segments is the recipe for a great show.

WWE “ECW on Syfy” Misses

Nothing advertised before the show: I can understand surprising people on Raw. Raw has the highest viewership and they want to create the “anything can happen” mentality. But ECW? Come on; there was nothing advertised for this show coming in. Chris Jericho appears on the show AND wrestles. You have to advertise that coming in.
