WWE Smackdown Hitlist: Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison, C.M. Punk as Jeff Hardy and vs. Matt Hardy, women's match, Mike Knox, Drew McIntyre, divas backstage
By Rich Twilling Sep 5, 2009 - 03:03 PM

WWE Smackdown Hits

Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison: Well, this was definitely one of the best matches of the year. I’m not sure if it was better than Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho at The Bash, but after watching it again, it very well may end up being better in my mind. Since the match itself was near perfection, the one problem I had with it was the fact that everyone who knew of Mysterio’s suspension (and it was front page news on our site and the WWE website), knew the outcome beforehand. Imagine how much better this match would have been if Morrison winning would have been a surprise?

C.M. Punk tricking the fans that he was Jeff Hardy: Brilliant segment. Punk’s babyface runs with the World Heavyweight Championship are distant memories now since he is being booked so damn well right now. Punk’s personality in 2009 makes him a natural heel and he is become a true top guy. Never mind Cena, Orton, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Jeff Hardy, or even Chris Jericho; Punk is the top guy in the company right now. His heat is off the charts and he still has amazing upside.

Punk mentioning the Anaconda Vice: When Punk first debuted in ECW, he used the Anaconda Vice submission as his finisher. Once he switched to the GTS, he abandoned the AV and never used it again. I love that he reminded us about the hold going into a match that he has to win by submission. That was very well done and it was one of those very important little things.

C.M. Punk vs. Matt Hardy: Matt looks like he is going to get a chance as the number two babyface, which means he will probably works some more main events on Smackdown. I’m not sure what it was exactly, but this match did not meet my expectations, but it was still good enough to warrant a spot in the upper half of this column. Whether or not Jeff is the reason for Matt’s spot this high on the card, it is Matt’s responsibility to run with it.

The Undertaker return: It was obviously predictable but nonetheless, I’m sure most fans are thrilled to see Taker back on Friday night, especially with the lost of Jeff Hardy.

Maria and Eve vs. Natalya and Layla: This was the best of these women’s tag matches over the past several weeks. I don’t necessarily understand the babyfaces going over since the two heels are the better workers. Natalya is awesome now and Layla is getting there.

Mike Knox promo: Knox looks like a legit badass in the ring and he is mesmerizing when he speaks. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Knox is money. I just hope WWE realizes that instead of letting him fizzle out.

Drew McIntyre: I can think of a lot of people who are tired of seeing R-Truth on television and I love the way Drew has been reintroduced to the main roster. Truth may be a midcard mainstay, but he is over with the crowd, so he is a good person to get over a new heel. I’m looking forward to more of this feud.

WWE Smackdown Misses

Finlay and Great Khali vs. Mike Knox and Kane: Finlay’s act was getting old when he was with Hornswoggle. That was a year ago. In this match, there were two heels who are much more valuable than the two babyfaces. Knox should be above all of these guys on the totem pole. Kane should be getting the most of Khali, but he cannot escape the program. So, why not give Finlay the shillegleh win? Ugh.

Backstage interaction with Michelle McCool, Maria, and Eve: It is one thing to be a face or heel and it is another thing to be a complete fool. Michelle is the champion and has what everyone wants. She came in and talked crap to the babyface divas and they did not attack her? Michelle threatened jail time? What the hell was that?
