WWE Smackdown Hits
Jeff Hardy and C.M. Punk promo: To me, this was the highlight of the show. Somehow, someway, Hardy and Punk have prolonged their red hot feud with very good and very logical promos. This feud made a lot of sense from the start given Punk's straight edge lifestyle vs. Hardy's freestyle lifestyle and both men have exceeded very high expectations from the feud. This Sunday will be a respectful and dynamic blowoff to this program.
The Hardys and John Morrison vs. C.M. Punk and the Hart Dynasty: It was nice to see Matt and Jeff on the same side again and beyond that, it was great to see the Harts and John Morrison get some main event rub. A lot of people think Morrison should be in the main event of SummerSlam and that is a good thing. He is primed and ready. If Jeff does actually take some time away, Morrison will have a chance to really cement himself as a main event talent.
Chris Jericho, Big Show, and Dolph Ziggler vs. Cryme Tyme and Rey Mysterio: How good is Chris Jericho? Wow; he has pretty much single handedly made Big Show and Cryme Tyme relevant again and relevant, respectively. It was odd to see two six man tags on the show, but this one was arguably the better of the two. This match did what it set out to do; successfully promote two big SummerSlam matches.
Matt Hardy promo: It's not often I would ever include a Matt Hardy promo in this section of the hitlist, but the guy was beyond solid on the mic. On top of that, his explanation for turning on Jeff and then siding with him once again needed to be a good one, and he came through. Kudos to Matt for doing the most with his opportunity.
Finlay vs. Mike Knox: This hit goes to Knox and that is not a knock on Finlay. Knox is money; plain and simple. I like seeing him work with someone like Finlay because Finlay is notoriously tough and Knox is tough as well. If Knox could get over on Finlay, it will make him look even tougher in the eyes of the fans. Perception is reality.
Overall show: This was a nice show and solid final build to SummerSlam, which is a solid card on paper. As Jason and I talked about on Dot Net Weekly, the show doesn't seem to be spectacular, but it is one of those classic "if you buy it, you should be happy with it" type of shows.
WWE Smackdown Misses:
Maria and Melina vs. Natalya and Layla: Again, this was just another random, thrown together tag team match in the Smackdown women's division. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to any of these matches. The women are basically token performers on the show and they just seem to be thrown out there for no good reason.
Kane promo: I like that WWE was doing their best to promote the least most anticipated match on the pay-per-view. However, despite how much praise I have given Kane lately, I just cannot get excited about this match. This miss has nothing to do with Kane really, but the fact that Khali is on the third biggest pay-per-view of the year while John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, and the Hart Dynasty are not, is wrong.
