TNA Impact Hits
Taz’s promo: I was expecting Taz and Samoa Joe together but I liked the fact that Taz was given the microphone by himself in the center of the ring. The live crowd really responded to him and I really enjoyed his explanation as to why he came to TNA to work with Samoa Joe. I still think Joe and Taz are a better fit as their own unit as opposed to being with the Main Event Mafia, but that is not a big deal right now.
Announcement of A.J. Styles vs. Matt Morgan in a best of three series: I would rather see Sting vs. Kurt Angle one on one, but if they are going with a third man, I like they are making that person win their way in. I’m guessing Morgan will be getting “tested” here and if he has three good matches with Styles, his push will continue.
Bobby Lashley’s appearance: This is a minor hit for me because while it was done well (Lashley attacking the Mafia as opposed to him joining), I am just not thrilled with seeing Lashley in TNA. He is the Goldberg to the Mafia’s nWo, a role I feel Joe could have played much better. If Lashley is good for business due to his MMA career, than I guess signing him will turn out to be a good thing. Stay tuned.
Tension between LAX: I was pleased to see Hernandez come out to help Homicide during the opening match and his promo afterward. His promo was much better than anything we’ve been hearing from Homicide lately. Homicide getting pissed at Hernandez was odd because you should be pissed if your partner doesn’t help you, but I’m interested to see where this goes.
Traci wins the Knockout Battle Royal: Again, this is just a mild hit because it was so obviously foreshadowed earlier in the evening. However, while I think Kong in the MEM would make for some great television, Traci makes more sense in the long term, especially if she is back to wrestle.
TNA Impact Misses
Ten man tag team match: I wouldn’t have minded this so much if it wasn’t so short. They could have let some of the competitors shine before moving so quickly to the finish. For example, A.J. Styles has done an awful lot of jobs lately and it just seems odd to me. As for Eric Young, I think he could be a fun heel, but not a guy who should be working with Styles in a program.
Oversaturation of the Main Event Mafia: I understand they are the focal point of the show, but the focal point of the show should be these guys getting other guys over. I am assuming that time will come, but I am not in favor of treating title matches as jokes, as they were tonight. I felt bad that Mike Tenay had to treat Amazing Red as a jobber in his match with Nash.
Homicide vs. Samoa Joe: Could you imagine these two getting twenty minutes for the X-Division Championship? That would be great. Instead, we were given a throwaway impromptu match between the two in which Joe was disqualified for punching the referee. Isn’t Taz there to make sure Joe does not do things like punch the referee during a match in which he is challenging for a title.
In ring action: The main event suffered because Foley was lumbering and Angle was hurt. The Mafia matches on the show were nothing to write home about because they were glorified squashes. The ten man tag team match could have been good but it was five minutes to set up another Eric Young heel turn.
