WWE “ECW on Syfy” Hits
Tommy Dreamer and Christian: I thought both men did a very nice job on the Abraham Washington Show. I mentioned in my report I was glad they went with the “each man gets in a slap in the face” as opposed to a pull apart brawl. I also enjoyed both of their comeback lines to Washington, who came across as the dated person trying to be funny, and failing. The ECW Title may not mean much, but at least they properly promoted the match.
Shelton Benjamin vs. Goldust: Since Goldust had played every weird character under the sun, people oftentimes forget he is a good worker. This was an usual match for an ECW show since both men here are veterans, but I thought it was a match the young guys should have watched, especially being a TV match. Anyone could learn loads from Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25, but learning how to work a television match is important too.
Tyler Reks vs. Paul Burchill: This was an enjoyable match between a new guy that could be very good, and someone who is already very good, but doesn’t get a sustainable push. I like Reks, but I liked D.J. Gabriel too, so go figure.
Yoshi Tatsu vs. William Regal: This was a fun way to start the show and Regal is the guy that Chris Benoit and Finlay were supposed to be, the veteran to take the young guys to school. Oddly enough, Finlay was not great in the role, but Regal was great here. Both men worked conflicting styles, but they meshed well together.
Ezekiel Jackson: Jackson has star potential written all over him and I hope they go all the way with him. Of course, they cannot rush him, but there is definitely a huge upside with this guy. I am very intrigued to see where they go with him.
WWE “ECW on Syfy” Misses
Abraham Washington: This is a mild miss because he isn’t horrible in his role, but he simply overdoes it. Think about it like this, if someone oversold in the ring, it would be noticeable. If someone oversells (or tries too hard) on the mic, it is also very noticeable. I think once Washington gets comfortable and experienced, he is going to be fantastic, but right now, he’s not there.
Vladimir Kozlov: I’ll admit I am intrigued to see him feud with Ezekiel Jackson, but seeing the two of them in the ring together made me wonder why Kozlov has been pushed as he has been while Jackson served as a lackey for The Brian Kendrick.
Overall show: This might surprise you given that the majority of the show made the ‘Hits’ section, but while all of those entries were good, nothing on the show was very good, great, or memorable. Forgettable shows are rarely shows I would put in the Hits section and this was no exception.
