WWE “ECW on Syfy” Hits

Christian vs. Shelton Benjamin: This match was the battle of two stars that deserve better. Christian has all of the talent in the world and Shelton is a good promo away from being a world champion. As it stands Christian is still fighting for a chance at the ECW Championship and Shelton is working his way up that ladder. This was a very good match and Shelton winning was the right move because the victory instantly catapulted him to the top of the Tuesday night card, where he belongs.

Zack Ryder vs. Goldust: I have always been a Goldust fan. I don’t want him to be a world champion or anything like that, but he is a good worker and the character is fun. Everyone knows how I feel about Ryder, so for a “filler” match, this was very smart. Ryder earned a clean victory over a former Intercontinental Champion and achieved another notch in his belt as a result.

Yoshi Tatsu vs. Paul Burchill: I expressed disappointment in not seeing Burchill on television lately, but I had forgotten about his family tragedy. I like Tatsu very much, but given WWE’s track record with Japanese wrestlers, I am stuck wondering what his long-term prospects are. Nonetheless, this match was a fine example of the potential this show has.

Tommy Dreamer vs. Vladimir Kozlov: Okay, normally I would be pissed that Dreamer, the ECW Champion, lost this match. However, my stance is a little different this time. Christian is the number one contender for Dreamer’s title. Shelton Benjamin defeated Christian and thus, propelled himself into title contention. Kozlov beating Dreamer accomplished the same thing. I am still not a huge Kozlov fan, but he is growing on me a little bit.

Ezekiel Jackson: I really enjoyed his promo and like I said last week in this column, I think he could be a huge star on this show. I love that his history with The Brian Kendrick was acknowledged. This was a seemingly simple segment, but it was excellent character development and one of those little things that goes a long ways in creating a star.

Seth Green on Raw: Since I didn’t get a chance to, I wanted to point out how great of a job Seth Green did on Raw Monday night. He was fantastic all night long and unfortunately for the celebrities that follow him, he set the bar very high. Of course, Seth’s career began in one of my all time favorite movies, as Chucky Miller in Can’t Buy Me Love.

WWE “ECW on Syfy” Misses

Nothing: Had Benjamin vs. Christian been in the main event slot, this would fall into the “great show” category. There was nothing to complain about during this show and despite the fact the “trade” gutted the show, ECW has bounced back solidly.
