The Hangover: Looking at WWE's The Bash the morning after

Dot Net Members are listening to the 95-minute recap of WWE's "The Bash" pay-per-view that Jason Powell and I recorded late last night. Plus, they will be listening to the second part of the Konnan audio early this week. Coming out of WWE's The Bash pay-per-view, a show in which I had the pleasure of attending, I cannot stop thinking about Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship. I went to show alone and sat amongst a bunch of little kids, one of which could not stop kicking the back of my chair, and this match was a sanctuary for me.
If you are familiar with and/or if you have read a lot of wrestler interviews, one question that gets asked a lot is, "Who is the easiest/best person to work with?" Out of the names I have heard as an answer to that question, Rey Mysterio comes up more than anyone else. Combine Mysterio with Jericho and you have a money program, in every sense, on your hands.
Back when Jericho feuded with Shawn Michaels last year, they had to reinvent themselves on the microphone every week because they cut a lot of promos together (and Jericho by himself as well). Jericho and Mysterio have had the task of reinventing themselves (in terms of their feud together) in the ring since they have had so many matches together. Their match at The Bash was their best yet and I was fully in tune to what was going on for the duration of the bout.
I would not necessarily call The Bash a one match show, but nothing else really stood out to me. Jeff Hardy vs. C.M. Punk was a match I was anticipating greatly, but it was a letdown of sorts. The finish had nothing to do with it either, as I thought it was pretty well done, however, the match itself left a lot to be desired. I imagine a rematch between the two will have what last night's match was missing.
Besides the greatness that was Jericho vs. Mysterio, what stood out the most was the bullshit that was John Cena vs. The Miz. Somewhere along the way, a series of people were responsible for "making" John Cena. Of course, Cena had the ability, charisma, and "it" factor to become a huge star. However, he needed help along the way and he got it.
The Miz also has the ability, charisma, and "it" factor to become a huge star. Last night could have been his huge break. He could have defeated Cena and been an instant top guy (he has what it takes to stay at the top if he was there). He could have pushed Cena to the limit with several nearfalls and lost a competitive match. That, combined with a look and nod of respect from Cena and Miz would have become a top guy.
What happened? Cena kicked the crap out of Miz in about six minutes. He beat him so convincingly that he was able to hit one of his finishing moves, make a sandwich, eat it, and then decide to apply his other finishing move, causing Miz to tap out in a few seconds. If that wasn't bad enough, Cena did the "kick dirt in your opponent's face" bit with his boots before leaving the ring. Cena gained absolutely nothing from winning that match. Miz could have been made. Nice going WWE.
Triple H and Randy Orton worked hard in the main event, but fifteen minutes of action outside of the ring made for a very boring live main event. It may have come across better on television, but these two need to move onto programs away from one another. I really enjoy both men and have a lot of respect for them, but I just have not bought into this feud.
I started the column with a positive, so I'll end with a few more. Chris Jericho and Edge won the tag team titles. That was a nice surprise for everyone in attendance and watching at home. Dolph Ziggler won a pay-per-view match and Kane returned. I guess by the time 8:00 PST rolled around, the best thing about the night, besides Jericho vs. Mysterio, was getting away from the smelly guy sitting next to me.
