The Hangover: Taking a look at TNA Slammiversary the morning after
Jun 22, 2009 - 10:45 AM |
This column will appear every Monday after a pay-per-view and is basically my reaction of the show after I have had a night to sleep on it. Enjoy.
-Coming out of TNA Slammiversary, a lot of people are talking; however, is what they are saying positive or negative? Of course, the big news coming out of the pay-per-view was Samoa Joe apparently joining the Main Event Mafia by helping Kurt Angle win the TNA World Heavyweight Championship. If you like surprising swerves, you may have liked this, however, you would have to like nonsensical things as well.
I define a good or great swerve as something very few people saw coming, yet if you look back, it makes perfect sense. Joe helping Angle last night made very little sense because the Mafia came out to the stage to applaud the entire situation. Yes, this is the same Mafia that Joe kicked the crap out of over the past several weeks. Apparently, they were all in on it and were willing to take beatings to swerve the masses.
On top of that, where in the hell was Sting? Did anyone else notice the leader of the Mafia was absent from the celebratory moment? Did anyone notice the announcers saying Joe had taken out Kevin Nash, Booker T, and Scott Steiner, and Angle was the final piece? There was no mention of Sting, even though his spot in the Mafia was up for grabs in his match with Matt Morgan.
I am guessing we will finally get the Kurt Angle vs. Sting program that has been teased for so long. Joe has a built in feud (upon his return from injury if he is going to miss time) with A.J. Styles, and I am guessing we'll see Jeff Jarrett vs. Mick Foley as well moving forward. The situation with Joe joining the Mafia makes me wonder about Taz and how/if he is going to be used. Joe joining the Mafia reminds me a lot of when Bret Hart would always side with Hulk Hogan in WCW instead of facing him for the World Championship.
The rest of the pay-per-view had its bright moments. The opening X-Division King of the Mountain match was solid and full of impressive spots. Beer Money vs. Team 3D was an enjoyable tag team match, although I could have done without the interference of the British Invasion. My favorite match of the night was Raven and Daffney vs. Abyss and Taylor Wilde.
Daniels vs. Shane Douglas was better than expected. I am wondering if TNA will use Douglas or if they brought him in just to work the anniversary show. The biggest disappointment of the night was Angelina Love vs. Tara. I have been loving what they have been doing in the women's division, but this match should have been a much bigger deal instead of a forgettable, six minute match.
Moving forward, TNA is going to have the task of trying to put the pieces together of the Joe heel turn. I am intrigued by a heel Samoa Joe and I will withhold too much judgment on him joining the Mafia, but I just do not see how they are going to make sense out of this. Hopefully there was a plan in place as opposed to this being a swerve for swerve's sake.
