WWE Smackdown Hitlist: Jeff Hardy's first promo as WWE Champion, Edge vs. Matt Hardy, Maryse vs. Maria, Jeff Hardy vs. Vladimir Kozlov, The Miz and John Morrison, overall show
Dec 20, 2008 - 10:25 AM

WWE Smackdown Hits

Opening segment with Jeff Hardy and Edge: It made sense to open the show with Hardy and his promo was exactly what it should have been. Edge's involvement in the segment was well done and setting up a program between the two over the next pay-per-view or two is a positive thing. I am looking forward to this feud and am excited about the match(es).

Edge vs. Matt Hardy: While it was not the blow away match it may have been in the past, it was a still a pretty good television match. It was pretty obvious that Edge was going to get the win, but the nearfalls were effectively done. Matt Hardy will probably never get the best of Edge; that is for sure.

Maryse vs. Maria: I am listing this as a hit because Maryse is a damn good heel. I am not sure what a Maryse vs. Michelle McCool program means for the return of Gail Kim, but this could be a solid program until Kim debuts (if she debuts on Smackdown). I think McCool is better as a heel, but at least they are putting some focus on the Diva's Championship.

WWE Smackdown Misses

Jeff Hardy vs. Vladimir Kozlov: Not only did I struggle to enjoy the match, I (and everyone) saw the Edge run-in from a mile away. It would have been nice to give Hardy a clean victory in his first match as WWE Champion, even against Kozlov. Also, Triple H was the one who looked the strongest at the end of the show, not Hardy.

The Great Khali and Mae Young: Khali's make out session with Mae Young was vomit inducing. The fact that we had to think about it again tonight produced the same result. I like a face Great Khali, but less is more in terms of these corny segments.

The usage of John Morrison and The Miz: Morrison and Miz are featured on all three WWE television shows. It is almost as if they have a feud per brand they are on and I am not on board with their program with Jesse and Festus. The first time they rang the bell to stop Festus, I thought it was cunning. When they mocked and imitated Festus, I liked it. Now, it seems like there is no direction and honestly, I hope they move Miz and Morrison to something better.

MVP loses again: Obviously, his losing streak is leading to something, but I just want them to get there already. Now it seems like Shelton Benjamin is having similar luck and I would not be surprised to see him drop the United States Championship to Hurricane Helms. I think MVP, and Shelton, could be doing a lot of great things on the show and it is frustrating sitting through this odd booking.

Overall show: I really cannot put my finger on it as to why, but the show just did not click with me. Jeff Hardy should have won his match and I think that just set the tone of my opinion of the entire show.
