Today’s Rundown: Mick Foley and Edge, Mr. Kennedy vs. Shelton Benjamin, Booking non-championship feuds, Jeff Hardy, Brian Kendrick and Ezekiel, Maria, Freddie Prinze Jr.
Mick Foley’s Performance on The Cutting Edge: I am buying this and was damn glad to see it. The last time the Foley character was interesting was when he made Randy Orton a star in 2004. Since then, his multiple comebacks have been horribly underwhelming to say the least. After last night, I would love to see Foley feud with Edge. I know it is unlikely to happen, but Foley made himself interesting again with this one performance.
Edge: I am continuing to buy Edge. I do not think anyone thinks he will defeat The Undertaker at Summerslam. However, even without Taker, he was able to essentially make himself the favorite with his performance last night. I always wished Edge would become more dependent on his own talent and less on his connections. I hope last night was the beginning of that.
Mr. Kennedy vs. Shelton Benjamin: I am buying this because matches like these are good for titles like the United States Championship. Kennedy and Benjamin went fourteen very good minutes in a non-title match. Kennedy has begun to find an identity for the first time since becoming a babyface. A competitive feud between two young, talented wrestlers over the U.S. Title is a very good thing.
The Booking of Non-Championship Feuds: I am definitely buying this on Smackdown. The aforementioned Kennedy vs. Benjamin, Big Show vs. Umaga, and MVP vs. Jeff Hardy have all been booked phenomenally. Add in Brian Kendrick and Vladimir Kozlov. In the past, if a world championship was not on the line, the creative team did not care. Now, that trend is changing for the better.
Jeff Hardy: I am buying. How over is Jeff Hardy? I would say no one in the company is more beloved by the fans. I said he would become WWE Champion within the next year and I stand by that.
Brian Kendrick and Ezekiel: I do not keep stats here, but I am buying these two for the third consecutive column. Kendrick has been given promo time for two straight weeks and big Zeek intervened physically at the end of Kendrick’s match. They are developing them are doing a fantastic job.
Maria defeats Victoria: I am selling this. If Maria debuted on Smackdown by defeating Maryse, I would be okay with that. However, Victoria deserves better than that. Victoria is awesome. She is a better heel than most of the people on the roster, and a better worker too.
Freddie Prinze Jr. joins the WWE Creative Team: This was the big news of the week and I am buying. Prinze is a smart and humble guy. He has experience in Hollywood, which Vince likes, and he is a huge fan. The combination of those facets should turn this into a good hire.
