1/18 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Jan 18, 2012 - 08:24 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett (Twitter - @itswilltime): Monday Night Raw this week cut a fantastic pace and showed just how good wrestling TV can be. It felt like the start of WrestleMania season with seeds being planted for C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho, Mick Foley vs. Dolph Ziggler and the continuation of John Cena's path to The Rock. There was hardly a misstep on the show (and even the missteps were fleeting). If the road to April 1st is half as entertaining as Monday's Raw, we have a great few months to look forward to.

Jake Barnett (Twitter - @barnettjake): WWE had a great week. If you missed the last episodes of Raw and Smackdown, seek them out. Between The Funkasaurus, Chris Jericho, Daniel Bryan, Big Show, CM Punk, Dolph Ziggler and Mick Foley, wrestling fans have much to look forward too. Great performances from them all this past week, and we haven't even gotten revved up for WrestleMania yet. Should be a great next few months.

Ryan Kester (Twitter - @TheRyanKester): Raw this week was a great example of how a wrestling show can be entertaining when it is given proper thought, pacing, and focus. This was the first time like I really felt we were starting down the Road to WrestleMania, and I can only hope WWE will continue to produce more shows like this in the coming weeks.

Chris Shore (Twitter - @TheShoreSlant): What a difference a week makes. Raw last week looked like it was written over a four hour bender of Starbucks and cocaine. This week's show had a much better flow, and managed to entertain many people. Let's hope Smackdown can continue the good vibes it set last week and deliver another good show.

TNA

Will Pruett: The last hour of Impact was basically exactly what the last hour of TNA Genesis was advertised as and should have been. This is good and bad. I'm not going to complain about two good to great matches on free TV, but at the same time as a pay-per-view buyer I feel a little cheated. There is a balance that needs to be struck between serving these two masters within TNA.

Jake Barnett: That Direct Auto Insurance skit ruined Impact for me. TNA must be pretty desperate for cash flow if they need their Tag Champs to pretend to have bad credit and lapsed insurance policies to please a sponsor.

Ryan Kester: Last week's Impact showed us some great in-ring action during the second hour. Kurt Angle, James Storm, Bobby Roode, and Jeff Hardy each worked their tails off to put on a great show. I simply wish that the same amount of effort and work rate could be given to TNA's PPV product. If it was, I really think TNA could actually see some return on investment rather than another round of disgruntled fans.

Chris Shore: It's bad enough when you make people pay for false finishes. It's even worse when you then give away the "real" finishes for free. TNA PPV buys are terrible, and it's no surprise why, they spend three hours telling their fans, "DO NOT BUY OUR GARBAGE, WE WILL SCREW YOU OVER." I know they want to cut back on their PPVs. The problem is when they can finally cut back to whatever number they want to do, the message they have been sending will have been received loud and clear. And then what happens?

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett (ROH): Fans who did not watch Final Battle and have been waiting and watching the TV show hoping for results and followup have to be disappointed. The live event shows have been fine, but ROH did themselves a disservice by not following up directly from Final Battle. If they want to be considered major league, they need to act like it. ROH has been a disappointment for the last six months.

Jake Barnett (ROH): If you're a Pro Wrestling fan of the old school, you really should go find one of the repeats of ROH TV from this past Saturday. It was one hour of solid Wrestling, and I found it to be a very nice change of pace from WWE and TNA.

Ryan Kester (UFC): No matter where your views fall on the debate about the UFC and the amount of money they pay their fighters, ESPN's decision to try to edit their interview with Lorenzo Fertitta to suit their story when the UFC had a camera taping the entire interview is just sad. There's really no way for ESPN to come out of that situation looking good, even if their intentions are pure.

Chris Shore (Indies): It appears Johnny Gargano, the man I call the best worker in all of independent wrestling, has hurt himself pretty bad. Johnny is a guy who has all the talent necessary to work at a high level, but he is very reckless. I don't know if his injury is the result of a careless bump, but at the final show at ECW Arena, he took several careless bumps after knowing he was hurt. I wish Johnny the best as he heals, and also wish that other indy workers will learn from, and not repeat, Gargano's mistake.
