WWE "ECW on Syfy" Hits
The Abraham Washington Show: For perhaps the first time ever, I enjoyed the segment. Tony Atlas was good, Christian explaining that The Hurricane just made a mistake and we all do, Zack Ryder's involvement, setting up the main event, and Abe actually being funny in reacting to people making fun of him, turned this into a solid segment. If TAWS was like this more often, it would be just fine every few weeks.
Shelton Benjamin vs. Vance Archer: I was very tired when I covered the show last night, but I quickly got into and stayed into this match. Archer has always been a good worker and of course, Shelton is great in the ring. They work pretty well together and although the finish was disappointing, at least we'll get another match out of this solid midcard feud.
Ezekiel Jackson and William Regal: Jackson had a very solid showing in losing to Christian at the Rumble. It was important to follow up well with him and they succeeded tremendously. Zeke and Regal laid out Hurricane, and then left Christian writhing in pain as the show went off the air. Overall, it was a solid hour for the heel duo.
WWE "ECW on Syfy" Misses
Vince McMahon's announcement: Could Vince have cared any less about this? I actually sort of praised this last night, but I was wrong. Of course, there is more time, but I think this was it in terms of Vince and ECW. We know WWE doesn't really care about ECW, but does Vince want us to care about the new show? If he is so ho-hum about it, why should we care?
Christian vs. Zack Ryder: It was fine of course given who was in it, but I was hoping for Ryder to be put over here and gain momentum in the process. Instead, it was a throwaway match between the very good champion and someone who could be a very good upper midcard heel. I was just hoping for more I guess.
Trent Baretta vs. Yoshi Tatsu: I praised Baretta for a few things he did during the match, but this was more about the match itself, in that there was absolutely no reason to care about it. Yoshi is a fun act, but he will never be anything more than that. I'm still not sold on Baretta and Caylen Croft as anything more than a faux 80s tag team.
Announce team: Josh Matthews has been good in his role. Byron Saxton was good until he turned into an annoying heel who used little to no logic in his explanations. However, last night, it was like they both sent in their partially completed clones to do the job. There was no sign of life from either guy, so hopefully they pick it up when the new show starts.
