WWE "ECW on Syfy" Hits

Zack Ryder becomes the number one contender for the ECW Championship: As I mentioned in my report last night, I was really happy Zack became Christian's next challenger. I am a fan of Ryder's character and his match with Christian several weeks ago was a very good one. Ryder is new talent challenging for a championship, so this should be a positive regardless of who is looking at it.

Battle royal to determine a new number one contender: The old school wrestling fan in me enjoys battle royals. I know Andre the Giant is not going to trot out and eliminate 3/4 of the competitors, but they are still fun to me. I agree that the number one contender's spot should be earned, and there are only so many ways to do it.

Paul Burchill attacks Hurricane Helms: I thought this was logical and solid progression of their feud. Burchill is still pissed at Helms, especially after last week, so he attacked him. His subsequent promo was also very good. Burchill showed why everyone keeps clamoring for him to get a push.

WWE "ECW on Syfy" Misses

William Regal left out of the battle royal: Tiffany's mic work at the beginning of the show was better than she has done to date. However, I don't like that her character did not allow Regal into the battle royal. Sure, Regal did not capitalize on his title opportunities, but he should have at least been given a chance to earn another title match (see: Punk, C.M. on ECW).

Zack Ryder vs. Yoshi Tatsu: They were given six minutes and five of them were devoted to rest holds. On top of that, Yoshi just does not deliver kicks with the same stiffness of his peers who also have kicks in their repertories. I'm glad Ryder made amends later in the show and Yoshi winning this particular match elevated both him and Ryder on this show.

Hurricane vs. William Regal: Regal's punishment match was with Hurricane, which was okay with me I guess, but the short length of the match seemed like a waste to me. ECW does not have a very large roster, so wasting a potential match like Hurricane vs. Regal is very short sighted.
