WWE NXT Hits
Miz attacks Daniel Bryan: WWE did a nice job of focusing on this pairing as they knew it was the most popular one going into the debut of the show. I thought Bryan had a pretty good night although I see the points of those who critiqued performance. Miz was great in kicking off their feud and he left us wanting to see more between these two.
Chris Jericho and Wade Barrett: First of all, I enjoyed the Jericho vs. Bryan match. The dynamic between Jericho and Barrett could be very entertaining. Barrett is a heel trying to follow in Jericho's shadow, so Jericho's reactions are going to be golden. His "I just want you to introduce me" line to Barrett, while Barrett was saying how great Jericho was, was awesome.
David Otunga: He really came across as a potential breakout star. He already has a lot going for him in terms of his brushes with mainstream entertainment and his intelligence. He will be a good promo guy and has the cocky yet calculating and cold heel character down. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.
Introduction videos: These were well done and also a necessity in getting to know these guys a bit before seeing them come to the ring. So many times WWE has sent a new guy to the ring and the fans shit all over him because he was bland with no personality. These guys at least get a chance to showcase their charisma via these video packages.
Christian and Heath Slater vs. Carlito and Michael Tarver: This is a stretch but I thought Slater looked decent in the ring. Tarver looked sloppy and green but he has an obvious look to him that will turn heads, so he just needs work. I am not a fan of Slater's look with his stringy hair, but perhaps that will grow on me.
Matt Striker's interview style: I like that Striker is standing up to the guys he is interviewing with a "pro veteran" stance. It will force the NXT rookies to think on their feet and stand up to criticism. It isn't as though Striker is on a witch hunt, he just represents the current WWE stars well.
Overall show: I thought the first show was well done. I liked the video packages. I liked that not all of the rookies were featured on the first show. It allowed us to get to know some of these guys better. I especially liked the feel of the show and how, as a viewer, I pictured myself in the boots of the rookies and sympathized with them. This show has a reality show feel and I mean that in a positive way.
WWE NXT Misses
Michael Cole's heel announcing: I like a good heel announcer but Cole just came across as the dork trying to act cool around the cool kids. His comments came across as scripted lines and not genuine emotion. He was also illogical in overlooking the obvious, and saying he didn't know who Daniel Bryan was but then later describing his career. This might grow on me but I didn't like it the first night in.
David Otunga vs. Darren Young: This match lasted less than a minute and that did not do either guy any favors. For the record, I love the pairing of Young with C.M. Punk and think it could be one of the most entertaining things on the show. As for the match, they should put them in situations to succeed and this was an example of that.
