WWE “ECW on SciFi” Hits
Tommy Dreamer and Christian vs. Vladimir Kozlov and William Regal Coming into the show, this main event announcement did absolutely nothing for me. The match was decent, but I give them credit at least for creating some intrigue with Kozlov and Regal. I am not sure they will bring in more viewers, but for those of us that already watch the show, at least they can make it as interesting as possible.
Sheamus: On a show that featured the debuts of many FCW stars, I felt Sheamus stood out the most. Of course, I’ve been clamoring to see him brought up to one of the main rosters for some time now. I enjoyed his squash match and finishing move, so hopefully he becomes a quick star on this depleted show.
Abraham Washington: I did not like his talk show (see below), but I thought he did a nice job with what he had to work with. Sometimes you have to differentiate between the performer and the segment he or she is involved in, and in this case, I thought Washington showed poise and promise.
Influx of new talent: Were all of the debuts memorable? No. Were all of the debuts good or even average? Probably not. However, after Tiffany had her fire sale, ala the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline, this show had to recreate their identity and they did so. Given the circumstances, it was all they could do, so they succeeded in that regard.
WWE “ECW on SciFi” Misses
Tiffany: Damn, they made her look like a fool twice this week. To have her come out and not even acknowledge her cupboards being raided empty was ridiculous. She could have even admitted they were a “small market team” that “won with young talent,” so they “decided to make a few changes.” Done and done. That explanation would have worked just fine.
The Abraham Washington Show: This was a creative way to debut Washington, but did this thing suck or what? Again, Washington played his role well, but the entire concept and the jokes were borderline terrible. If they plan to make this a regular thing, they need to shorten it given this is the hour long ECW show, one that is usually heavy with wrestling.
Shelton Benjamin: Slept with somebody’s wife? Crapped in somebody’s bag? Said Vince McMahon had a flabby physique? I am not sure what he did to be demoted to ECW, again, but to get there and mock a Japanese wrestler, only to lose in less than two minutes in a comedy squash, was ridiculous. After last night, I’m sure being the “designated bump guy” in MITB seems like a million miles away.
Overall show: Well, the trade did not do the show any immediate favors. I am sure (hoping) a couple of these young guys will step up and make this show fun to watch. This is going to be a holdover period for ECW and people watching this show are going to have to be patient.
