Shore's WWE Vengeance Preview and Predictions: Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena in a last man standing match for the WWE Championship, Mark Henry vs. Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship, full card
Oct 23, 2011 - 05:08 PM

By Chris Shore

The following predictions are made with no inside information or foreknowledge of the planned outcomes. They are guesses based on what I think WWE will do. And even if I had foreknowledge, WWE changes so much last minute I would probably be wrong anyway.

Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena in a Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship: Let me stipulate off the bat so I don't have to say it again and again: None of these matches received a proper build. That said, this one probably has the most backstory, though certainly not the cleanest. I was looking at old reports from December of last year and reading about how great Del Rio was, and how well WWE was handling him. My, what a difference a year makes.

A last man standing match gives Cena all the cover in the world through interference or some gimmicky thing like being pinned to the ground by some rigging or some such stupidness. And yet I cannot believe WWE thinks Cena not answering a ten count is somehow better than being pinned. I really want Del Rio to win this match, even if it is a shitty win. But the logical part of me continues to believe they won't make Cena lay down for 10.

Prediction: John Cena wins the WWE Championship.

Mark Henry vs. Big Show for the World Heavyweight Championship: WWE has a terrible poker face sometimes. The only saving grace about Big Show dominating Mark Henry since returning is that it "tells" everyone that Mark Henry is going to retain. This is not a bluff, this is exactly like the Undertaker videos leading to WrestleMania. It is what it is. The best thing on WWE TV right now continues his run. But don't be surprised if Big Show gets disqualified either.

Prediction: Mark Henry retains the World Heavyweight Championship.

Triple H and C.M. Punk vs. The Miz and R-Truth: I don't know how you can take one of the biggest names in the last 20 years, put him with three bright to white-hot stars, and make it into a shit sandwich, but by god WWE did it. I could not care less about any of these guys right now. And I truly mean it. I have no desire to see this match. Hell, it'll probably be pretty good by WWE standards. But if I missed it, I would not be moved to press play if you pre-loaded it on my DVR for me. That's how little these guys mean right now. And that is the saddest thing I will write all day.

Prediction: Hunter doesn't take the pinfall. I'll take Hunter and CM Punk by DQ involving a returning Kevin Nash.

Sheamus vs. Christian: See above rant. This is another match that is superb on paper, but we've seen it too many times already, a point even Teddy Long had no problem pointing out. Admittedly, these two really don't have anybody else to feud with, but that's why you book more than 45 minutes out folks. I'm taking Christian here because I think this feud hangs around for a while.

Prediction: Christian defeats Sheamus.

Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton: This is my trap match. If there is a match that has the opportunity to trap my attention, it will be this one. I'm also picking from the heart here. There are certainly other matches on this card that can, and will, be good in-ring, but this is the only one with a star like Orton who can get away with letting it all hang out. There is a story here. WWE has done a poor job telling it, but they haven't killed it yet. If told correctly, with a Cody Rhodes win, you can give Orton his heat back later in the feud and make this a great match. I hope this is the real rub that Orton owes Cody from Legacy.

Prediction: Cody Rhodes beats Randy Orton. Stop laughing at me.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Zack Ryder for the WWE United States Championship: This is the match I am least sure of. Actually, this throws both Ziggler matches in the air. If this match goes on first, look for both titles to change hands and Ziggler to continue both feuds and complain about having to do all the work. If the tag match goes on first and Swaggler loses, look for Ziggler to retain the title. Either way, Ziggler walks out of here with some gold tonight.

Prediction: Dolph Ziggler to leave with a championship, but only one.

Air Boom vs. Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger for the WWE Tag Team Championships: See above rant.

Prediction: Dolph Ziggler to leave with a championship, but only one.

Beth Phoenix vs. Eve for the WWE Diva’s Championship: I have no idea where this one is going. I'm picking Beth because…well…just because I guess.

Prediction: Beth Phoenix retains the Divas' Championship.

Be sure to join Ryan Kester and I as we cover the show live starting at 7:00 CT, and join Jake Barnett and I as we break down the show on audio later tonight exclusively for Dot Net members.
