6/22 Wednesday One Shots: The Dot Net staff give their quick thoughts from the previous week in WWE, TNA, MMA and indy wrestling
Jun 22, 2011 - 05:38 PM

Welcome to the Wednesday One Shot. Each week, we will present a quick "one shot" thought from each staff member about the previous week in each of the following areas: WWE, TNA and Other (MMA, Indies, etc).

WWE

Will Pruett: A lackluster pay-per-view and a not so great Raw have left me tired and burnt out on the WWE product. It would take two brilliant shows to leave me encouraged by the six hours of WWE we got in two days. I do plan to be enthusiastic about the C.M. Punk and John Cena storyline that is developing. Win or lose on July 17, Punk will have the world talking about him as he rides off into the sunset (or doesn't).

Jake Barnett: CM Punk has single handedly created a lot of interest in the MITB PPV. His contractual status combined with a hometown crowd that will likely be anti-Cena will make for an amazing atmosphere.

Mark Gessnar: C.M. Punk is the best wrestler of this generation. He is the best promo man in the business, whether babyface or heel. He is phenomenal in the ring. Can anyone name a bad match that he has had? He helped put ROH on the map. He was one of the only reasons to watch WW-ECW. He has been involved in some of the best angles in wrestling in the last decade. He brought out the best in Superstars such as: JBL, Jeff Hardy, (WWE's) Rey Mysterio, and Randy Orton. If he is truly leaving, I personally will be upset by this. Punk is among my list of favorite wrestlers of my lifetime.

Ryan Kester: The Power to the People concept can go ahead and die in a fire. It makes an otherwise decent show drag on and on and gives us a bunch of campy crap I simply do not want to see. Plus, WWE can't even take steps to test their equipment and make sure the voting works properly.

Chris Shore: I have to say, I was very disappointed with Capitol Punishment. Every match on paper was worth seeing for either work rate or story (and in the case of the WHC, both). But I left the Evo guys that night feeling like they didn't do all they could do with the show. It's hard to put a finger on exactly what it was, but it just did not deliver for me.

TNA

Will Pruett: The Bound for Glory Series will hopefully be more good than bad after a really nice debut this week. The rollout of the scoring system could have been handled better, but the announcers putting over what the in ring action means to the championship and the main event of the biggest show of the year is a huge plus. In a company that says wrestling matters, this series may finally embrace that saying.

Jake Barnett: Titles mean nothing, wrestling still doesn't matter. TNA creative holds back their potential, and it seems the upper management are the only people who haven't noticed.

Mark Gessnar: Are you f---ing kidding me?! Over the past few weekend there has been interviews with Paul Heyman talking about his plan for TNA if he was put in charge. Gabe Sapolsky laid out Heyman's brilliant plan for bringing Bryan Danielson into the company. Why the hell would you not bring in one of, if not the best bookers in wrestling history to book your company, especially with the plans he's had that have been revealed over the last few day. Clearly, "they'll never see it comin' bro matters" more than intelligent and effective booking. Smart call TNA, smart call.
Ryan Kester: Eric Young ruined an otherwise great edition of Impact for me last week. His work with Hervey, who was never properly identified, was eye-rolling at best, especially for guys like me who didn't grow up watching his show. Get this man off of my TV.

Chris Shore: I have to tell the truth. I still have not watched TNA from last week and my brain is so happy right now. Kester seemed to think the show was pretty good, but I'm not convinced. I have to watch it before we can talk about it on Dot Net Weekly (members only!) tomorrow, but that makes my brain sad.

Other (MMA, Indies, Etc)

Will Pruett: ROH - With Best in the World this weekend, I have to wonder if ROH has booked themselves into a corner. Davey Richards has promised to never again challenge for the ROH Championship should he lose this match, but Eddie Edwards is still a new champions who needs wins to boost his credibility. Do you lose what you have in Eddie to capitalize on Davey's obvious talent?

Jake Barnett: ROH - I'm really optimistic about the next iPPV and the possibilities of the upcoming TV deal. If ROH can find the right balance of story and action, they could have lightning in a bottle.

Mark Gessnar: MMA - Clearly, New York dislikes money. Dana White has announced that if MMA is legalized in New York that they will run two shows in the state, one of which will be at Madison Square Garden. UFC shows generate millions upon millions of dollars in the cities they run for their shows. However, yet again, the bill to legalize MMA in New York did not even reach the floor to be voted upon for being legalized this year. Last year, it was chalked up to not having time due t

Ryan Kester: UFC - I have been going back and watching some old episodes of The Ultimate Fighter because I have seen so many fighters referenced from the various seasons of the show. I just happened upon the live fight between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonner. If you haven't seen this fight yet, you need to go out of your way to see it. It is easily one of the best fights I have ever seen, and anyone who calls themselves a fan of the UFC owes it to themselves to see that fight.

Chris Shore: ROH - I am very much looking forward to the ROH Best in the World iPPV this weekend. It feels like it has been years since I have seen anything from them. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and that is true. But absence also leaves me wanting to hook up with somebody, and in the absence of what I want I will take what I can get. Wait, are we still talking about wrestling?
