Pruett's Pause: WWE WrestleMania XXVIII - The Rock defeats John Cena clean, The Undertaker and Triple H end an era, but not a streak, C.M. Punk and Chris Jericho deliver a best in the world worthy match and so much more

By Will Pruett

- I am quite glad that WWE is doing the online preshow for WrestleMania again. It was fun to see the stadium and ring setup prior to starting the show. The Uso's, Primo and Epico and Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd delivered an exciting, short match. I'd love to see more from these three teams in a rebuilding effort.

- Lillian Garcia, as always, did a great job with "America The Beautiful" to open the pay-per-view. I love the patriotic opening and the flyover. Production-wise, this was stunning.

- This year's opening video was not my favorite. I love these packages, but this one was too focussed on Cena and Rock and not merely on the grandeur of WrestleMania. This was still a great package, but the last few have set the bar rather high.

- I missed the grand pyro display at the beginning of WrestleMania, but I understand that it would have been wasted in the outdoor environment. It was something different, but the opening still worked.

- I'm not going to be angry about the World Heavyweight Championship match simply because the match matched the build. I do believe that Daniel Bryan and Sheamus deserve better, but this did create a moment for both men. I'm sure we'll still get a great 25 minute match from those two in the next month.

- With how passionate the fans were for Daniel Bryan all through the night, WWE must know that they miscalculated by having him lose so quickly.

- If there would have been an extra four or five minutes in the Bryan and Sheamus match, it would have been worse than the quick effort we did see. This match was all climax when a four to five minute match would have lacked one completely.

- John Laurinaitis' pep talk to team Johnny was pretty enjoyable. While this story was given far more time than it should have been, it was fun to see this short backstage teamwork segment.

- Kane and Randy Orton had a match that far exceeded the story they had going into their match. They both worked hard and showed why they deserved their veteran spots. I found this match to be one of the more surprising elements of the evening.

- Kane winning was even more of a surprise than the quality of his match. With this story now continuing, it seems like they will need to put something new into this feud. Hopefully that new element is superior to "you shook my hand, now I'll kill you" which is what we're seeing now.

- I would suggest that the "Deadliest Catch" segment be stricken from the record. As much as I love hearing Ron Simmons say "Damn!" this segment was just bad.

- The Big Show and Cody Rhodes had the match that I expected them to. Cody Rhodes looked good by being able to bring it to a much larger wrestler. Big Show looked good due to Cody bumping around for him. Big Show winning the Intercontinental Championship may be seen as a step back for him and for the title, but I believe it works . Show can easily transition it to the next champion.

- I expected Big Show vs. Cody Rhodes to be the match that went under a minute. I'm glad that WWE did not pull that twice in a night, but I do wish it would have been done with Cody vs. Show instead of Sheamus vs. Bryan.

- What was the point of the random Diva's video package? It looked like something you would expect to see on Superstars, not on WrestleMania. It did not tell the story of the match, it just highlighted who the women were.

- Beth Phoenix's headdress was one of the silliest WrestleMania outfits in history. It belongs in the Hall of Fame with Triple H's Thor costume from WrestleMania 22.

- Beth Phoenix and Maria Menounos are not going to win any awards for their acting on Extra.

- The Diva's match was not as bad as it could have been, but it was not worth the time it was given. I wish WWE would make an effort to make this division matter. A singles match for the Diva's Championship would have been far more important than a silly celebrity tag team match.

- The first hour of this show was a little bit painful. Every match and segment that looked like it was going to be filler was on in the first hour. It was a little too much, too soon. It was hard to keep my focus on the show since none of it really mattered.

- Shawn Michaels was great in his backstage interview. He really did add to the match between Undertaker and Triple H, both in the build and execution. It was extraordinarily fitting to have him involved in the last chapter of this feud.

- Jim Ross commentating the Hell in a Cell match was fantastic. He enhances any match he is involved in. Michael Cole's welcome to Jim Ross at the commentary table hopefully signals the end of the heel Cole character. This three man booth worked really well for the Hell in a Cell match.

- Speaking of Michael Cole, I honestly believe that he is the second best commentator in the world when he is not playing a silly heel character. He lived up to that with a great, serious performance on this show. This is exactly what we all want to see from Cole and hopefully he continues to deliver it.

- Placing the Hell in a Cell match at the top of the second hour was surprising, but it was absolutely the right call. There needed to be maximum separation between the Hell in a Cell and Rock vs. Cena and that was delivered. Undertaker has to enter at night, so that was another hurdle, but it all worked out perfectly.

- Where did Shawn Michaels' pyro disappear to?

- Triple H's entrances set is also available for birthday parties as a bounce house. I do believe WWE's online store has the details.

- Was anyone else surprised by the lack of video package to hype Undertaker vs. Triple H. I assumed we would see what we usually see on Raw here, but instead we went straight from entrances to match. I consider the video packages a setup for the match and part of what makes them so special.

- The Undertaker may have looked like a new version of Super Shredder, but he was an awesome version of him, so I'll allow it. It may not have been my favorite Undertaker costume, but it was definitely a decent one at best.

- The Undertaker's Mohawk was the perfect choice for his hair. It was evil, sinister and new, while not making him look exceptionally old. The awkward way the commentators kept highlighting Undertaker emotionally cutting his hair was a little silly, but the new look it great.

- The buildup to the moment the Hell in a Cell dropped down was fantastic. The Cell having the most expensive theme music on the show was pretty funny to me. I will always love the standard cage lowering music, but the Cell entering to Metallica was pretty cool.

- It will be asked for years if Hell in a Cell added to Triple H and Undertaker and I would argue that it did, purely for the spectacle of the match. It was smoke and mirrors, but it is hard for me to imagine a better use of smoke and mirrors than this match.

- The chair-shots between Triple H and Undertaker were sickeningly intense. The welts on their bodies as the match ended proved just how hard they went out there to hit. It is easy to do this one night a year when they don't have to wrestler Monday or Tuesday, but I still admire the punishment they were willing to take.

- The ring may have been mic'ed a little too well for the drama between Triple H, Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. Hearing them so clearly made it a little silly. Sometimes it is best to let fans infer the words being said instead of forcing them down their throats.

- One big question going into WrestleMania was whether or not Triple H or Undertaker would bleed and we saw Triple H get opened up hard-way by Undertaker. This use of blood was fantastic simply because it has been years since we've seen blood like that. WWE has made that gimmick matter and added some legitimacy to Hell in a Cell with this.

- The story told in Hell in a Cell was a perfect ending to a rivalry that has been ongoing since 2007. It finished the story of Shawn Michaels, Undertaker and Triple H in the most fitting of ways. Seeing them as old rivals that have grown to respect each other was amazing. This story has been told perfectly since it started. I would be willing to call it the best story ever told in wrestling history, but I reserve the right to retract that opinion in the coming months and years.

- There is so much more to say about the End of an Era match, but it will have to wait for another day.

- The Hall of Fame introductions were the perfect come-down from Hell in a Cell. The break was necessary for the fans and the ability to applaud Edge and The Horsemen had to be a privilege for the fans in attendance.

- I was expecting non-stop, rapid fire action from the Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny match and was treated to a sleepy effort without a ton of excitement. I know that they were there, again, to bring the crowd down, but this was a depressing effort from the twelve men involved. The match was definitely less than the sum of its parts.

- Dolph Ziggler took the bump of the night in the twelve-man tag. I hope that he moves on to bigger and better things in the next few months. He has earned it.

- Eve's re-heel turn was unsurprising. I love the evil Eve character and I hope that she ends up being an important character on TV. She can be a fully developed three dimensional character and those are missing in the Diva's division.

- The new disqualification stipulation added to C.M. Punk and Chris Jericho was not terribly necessary. It may have added a special story to the first five minutes of the match, but it hindered the progress of the match more than it helped it.

- C.M. Punk's entrance and pyro display looked like what one would expect from the WWE Champion. I love the positioning of them as the semi-main event as that adds some legitimacy to the Championship itself.

- Chris Jericho's new jacket is a masterpiece.

- While Jericho and Punk started off a little bit slow, they definitely worked into a match befitting the "Best Wrestler in the World" label. The last five minutes of this one had me on the edge of my seat. This was a match where either man could have gone over and had it make sense and they played on that masterfully.

- I still believe that Punk and Jericho have ideas and gimmicks to use in rematches that will keep their matches exciting. This feud is not over and as it picks up steam it will be fun to see develop.

- C.M. Punk, the WWE Champion, was able to add yet another feather to his cap by having a great match and winning at WrestleMania. The WWE is proving that they are serious about making Punk into a major star and I love it.

- If you read my columns often, you know that I love the "Funkasaurus" Brodus Clay. His segment was absolutely silly and absolutely hilarious. The dancing mommas should not become a regular attraction, but I loved the attempt to get the mid-card comedy act on WrestleMania.

- While some people may not have enjoyed the concerts before the John Cena and Rock entrances, I appreciated the attempt to do something different. Machine Gun Kelly's promo for John Cena was interesting, as the crowd was just bound to boo him after that, but it probably did not change the reaction at all.

- What the concerts did succeed at was building anticipation for The Rock and John Cena's respective themes. I am so glad that WWE decided not to lose the pop that those would create in the concerts.

- I can't be the only one that was hoping The Rock would ride the random Tron lightcycle that Flo Rida had with him to the ring. That would have been amazing.

- The main event atmosphere of Rock vs. Cena was spectacular. I have never heard a crowd pop for a bell ringing the way Miami did for this match. This was the environment they hoped for when they made the match a year out and it showed that the level of anticipation they built was worth it.

- I'm not calling the one year build a success, but I am convinced by the atmosphere of this match that it did do some good.

- The Rock and John Cena played the crowd perfectly to build them to a fevered pitch. This match was so special to see and hear. Much like Rock vs. Hogan years ago, without the crowd it may not be as good, but with them, it belongs in the cannon of amazing WrestleMania main events.

- The action between Rock and Cena was really well done. The Rock looked to be in great shape and more importantly, he looked to be able to play a crowd as well as he ever did. John Cena was prepared to work as a pseudo-heel and did that well.

- The finish of Rock vs. Cena surprised and excited me. It was a little bit sudden, but playing off of the idea of John Cena making a mistake in the biggest match of his life was really well done.

- The Rock leaves with his head held high and with the claim of being he biggest superstar of all time after this match. His story will be intriguing to see develop in the next few months. We know that this won't be Rock's last match, but will it be the end of Rock vs. Cena?

- What about John Cena? He now has to deal with losing the biggest match of his life. Where does he go from here? There is something so interesting about a character that was invincible being forced to deal with his own disappointment. This humanization may be the best thing to ever happen to Cena.

- I appreciated the clean finish between Cena and Rock. As exciting as Brock Lesnar may have been, he would have been a cop out finish to the biggest match of all time. I still look forward to seeing what he does when he returns, but WrestleMania was best left clean.

This show definitely delivered on almost every level. There was good wrestling, good storytelling and a match that will be remembered for the ages. Can a wrestling fan ask for anything more? It did frustrate me that the World Championship match went so short, but they still have a lot of story to tell. The top three match delivered exactly what was expected.

This was one of my favorite WrestleManias of the last ten years. It was not just a one match show and it easily could have been. For in-ring action, it is hard to think of a WrestleMania that tops this one. For moments, it is hard to think of a WrestleMania to top this one. Finally, WWE put on a true super-card here. Go out of your way to see this show and this replay.
