Pruett’s Pause: WWE Raw SuperShow – Chris Jericho and Triple H offer exposition, Six Pack Challenge with Elimination Chamber participants featuring C.M. Punk, John Cena and The Rock embrace Twitter hate
Feb 7, 2012 - 03:07 PM

By Will Pruett

- It’s always an awkward transition to go straight from a video package to pyro opening on the stage. A buffer or musical interlude (hopefully not Nickelback) would be a nice way to space these out.

- One of the issues with this show was the fact that so many of the promos offered exposition. Triple H began his promo by explaining just what happened last week and telling us all that it was “eerily similar” to last year. These are things that don’t need to be said.

- Another major issue was the sheer amount of video package on this show. The Triple H videos were effective, but they were also rapid fire. The same goes for Undertaker’s response package. It seemed like a contest for who could make the best video.

- Undertaker is really good at making collages.

- Although I don’t appreciate the rapid fire nature of them, the video packages really did help to highlight the characters and enhance them.

- Big Show and Daniel Bryan have wrestled each other quite a few times on TV. They always have a decent to good match, but they also always have the same match. I hope they can be kept apart on TV for a little while at this point.

- What does it say about Vince McMahon when many of his heels seem to be preachy people extoling virtues that most people would not be against? From what I can garner, he loves meat-eating, drug-using, censor-opposing people.

- Why would WWE choose until the middle of the show to promote that Chris Jericho would talk? They would be wise to have the announcers run down the major events coming up on the show towards the beginning, much like TNA Impact Wrestling does on a weekly basis.

- WWE is doing a logical thing by teaming with NASCAR. I don’t care about it though.

- I enjoy the video packages that show the history of the Elimination Chamber. They set up why this spectacle is important and worth watching. Now WWE just needs to find a way to still have these matches while not diminishing their WrestleMania title matches.

- David Otunga “Tebowing” was about two months late, but the Otunga character has been growing on me.

- What reason does Jerry Lawler have to not believe that Otunga is a lawyer? Is he planning to suspect every gimmick from here on out? I’m guessing he doesn’t believe that Doink was really a clown.

- As much as I have enjoyed this new iteration of Chris Jericho thus far, he really lost something on this show. His promo sounded and felt like Jericho from 2010, not the new and sparkly Jericho. Maybe he can only do so much and has reached the limit where nothing is new, but I was hoping for something better.

- Chris Jericho is another wrestler that offered too much exposition with his promo. He explained his entire character since his return and, in a way, ended it.

- Silent promos work when used sparingly. I understand the parallel between what Punk did on this show and what Jericho had been doing, but bringing this a week after the Triple H and Undertaker segment last week felt like a repeat.

- The Elimination Chamber matches this year look weaker than in years past, but when you look at the talent that is not available for them, you’ll understand why. The Undertaker, Triple H, John Cena, Kane, Rey Mysterio, Alberto Del Rio, Christian and Edge are all in other programs, injured or retired when they would normally fill those spots.

- The Great Khali sold that RKO from Randy Orton relatively well, but I wish he wasn’t in this slot at all.

- The Twitter “war” between John Cena and The Rock is actually making me less excited for the match. It is making a feud that should seem like an epic clashing of eras feel like a petty feud. I would say that my Twitter feud with Dot Net’s own Chris Shore is more intense than Cena and Rock.

- This was hard tag match on Raw with the Divas and Orton and Khali both using them as storytelling devices.

- It is exciting to see Shawn Michaels getting involved in the Triple H and Undertaker feud again this year. The three of them produced my favorite promo of last year on the go-home show to WrestleMania and I know that magic can be there again.

- What exactly is the difference between an Ambulance Match and a Stretcher Match and why should I be compelled to watch either of them? Please do not email me with the actual answer to this question.

- Triple H apparently has match making power on Raw again, even though it was taken away from him because of his personal problems, which Undertaker has proven clearly are not over. If Triple H and John Laurinaitis can make matches (and we all know we’re just one sub 3.0 rating away from Vince McMahon) how do their positions differ? This power struggle is more confusing than TNA in 2011.

- R-Truth took a hard fall and hopefully is okay after his spill out of the ring. It looked like both he and The Miz were off on their timing, which just produced a cavalcade of hurt.

- The last portion of the match flowed surprisingly well considering R-Truth was eliminated earlier than he should have been. Kudos to the other five performers for making up for his absence.

- Chris Jericho and C.M. Punk had a nice stare-down moment in the middle of the main event. I’m excited to see where this program goes in the coming months, even if this show felt like a little too much interaction for a match we most likely will not see for 55 days.

- Chris Jericho winning the final spot in the Elimination Chamber is a great call. He can connive and heel his way into a championship while not having to give away too much action with Punk. I’d expect Punk to enter first and for these two to be the final two men (possibly with Punk receiving a barrage of finishers from an exiting third man left).

- Cutting to the female screaming sound while Jericho held the title was straight up awkward, as was the entire Kane and Eve segment. This should have been cut from the show for time. Eve has been doing good work, but Kane is more grating every time we see him.

This was a decent, but unexceptional show. The WrestleMania feuds are getting clearer and the hype for Elimination Chamber was definitely in place. I worry that WWE will burn people out on these ‘Mania feuds prior to the event. With hype for three matches already happening it becomes a struggle to fill eight more weeks of TV and keep it fresh.

This was not the blockbuster that last week was, but was a generally positive show. Now WWE needs to take the focus off of its world-class production department and put it in the ring where wrestlers can sell matches with their true skills.

Let's do some good old fashioned talking about this show! Feel free to email me at itswilltime@gmail.com or to follow me on twitter at twitter.com/itswilltime.
