WrestleMania 24 on-site report: More on the accident, Chris Benoit's name omitted, crowd reaction to Floyd Mayweather
Mar 31, 2008 - 10:49 AM |
Dot Net reader Thomas Starr of Deland, Fla. filed the following report regarding his WrestleMania 24 experience.
I attended WrestleMania last night and the firework accident actually happened a section over from where we were sitting. The fireworks were on some sort of wire and I think they were meant to spin around. I'm not sure if they were meant to fly into the air or to just spin in place. They were positioned on the stadium lights. Instead of what they were supposed to do they flew into the crowd.
Luckily, many people in the section had left after the Floyd Mayweather match and even more left right after Undertaker's match was finished. The accident could have been much much worse had people stayed until the end and the after show fireworks. Local news is covering it heavily. Reports right now say 45 people were injured, but none seriously so far.
The WrestleMania programs listed all the previous WrestleManias and the top matches of the shows. Wrestlemania 20 deleted Chris Benoit's name of course. It simply stated that the title was won in a triple threat match. This actually got some buzz in the arena. People were actually talking quite a bit about Benoit throughout the day. Almost a year later and people are still trying to figure it out. There was some uneasiness when Triple H applied the crippler crossface to John Cena during their match.
Speaking of the Cena vs. Triple H vs. Randy Orton match, the crowd had a very interesting reaction as usual. If you were to split up my section into 10 people it was probably four for Triple H, three for Cena, and three for Orton. The cheers for Orton were split. One person who was just a fan, two who were just tired of Triple H with the belt and hated Cena. They were smart not to put that match on last. There was no momentum for a title change and neither Cena nor Triple H were over enough to make the win mean something.
Mayweather was the most over heel. I don't know if it came across on TV, but the crowd hated him. They didn't particularly like Big Show, but they really wanted Mayweather to get his ass kicked. Every time Show did anything to him—even just standing on him—got a great reaction. Every heel in the industry should take note on Mayweather's performance. They can't match it, because some of it was the outsider thing, but he really was good in the heel role as well.
Our section was rather upset over the screens going down. We were way up there and it was difficult to see. When the screens went out it was even worse. But they did get them back up rather quickly.
There were "Woos" throughout the day. The level of intensity certainly went up when he came out. It was a great atmosphere for the match. It didn't quite match Rock vs. Hulk Hogan, but it was great.
Kim Kardashian may have been the worse guest they have ever had, but that ass should have its own monument.
