A Dot Net reader praises the Jeff Hardy storyline, a second reader bothered by the bait and switch at WWE Survivor Series
Nov 24, 2008 - 11:19 AM

The following emails were sent in response to the Jeff Hardy storyline and last night's Survivor Series pay-per-view. If you would like to add your thoughts on either subject, send your comments to dotnetjason@gmail.com.

I doubt many will agree with me but I find that what WWE did with Jeff Hardy was kind of a brilliant thing to do. It serves to functions in this case. One is to explain how Edge comes out of the blue and wins the titles. We all know the story line will be Edge attacked Jeff to take him out so we could come in "steal" the title as in almost every Edge title reign. It more then likely setup a feud between Edge and Hardy.

While Vladimir Kozlov and Triple H can have their feud. While it may have suck to lead people to think Hardy was unconscious in stairwell of a hotel given pass history. However Triple H would have not been the guy you wanted taken out since he is your basic main eventer on Smackdown. Kozlov is being built as this wrestler who is powerful and can't lose. They can't put him in a spot where Edge beats him up, knocks him out, and makes him look weak. Hardy was the only one who could have been put there for the purpose of the story and business.

However, the second part - and why its was a good move to put hardy there - is his past. Now you have guy with a questionable past making news on CNN.com and TMZ for being unconscious in a stairwell when in reality he wasn't. CNN.com and TMZ want to be the first to announce something horrific with a wrestler and they don't even take the time to check with another source other then it was on WWE.com . However, after anything tragic happens in wrestling they report it and will go find someone with inside wrestling knowledge to comment on what happen. As I look at there sites, I don't see anything about them being duped. I think it goes to show Vince McMahon is right about one thing. Media outlets want you think something that might not be true.

I think the idea of having Hardy do this angle is a two part thing - which I find a good move by WWE - even if something its in bad taste. It didn't serve as a hook to me, as I didn't order the pay-per-view, nor did I know anything about the Hardy angle until this morning.

Powell's POV: For starters, there were some mainstream news outlets such as AOL that cited the WWE website story, but I don't believe TMZ or CNN were among them. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one because I thought Hardy's history (and WWE's history) was the primary reason this angle was so disgusting. They left fans and coworkers wondering whether Hardy had truly been found unconscious in a stairwell. Had they added a line that indicated in some way that he was attacked, then most people would have assumed that it was part of a wrestling storyline. Rather, they left people to assume the worst.

The media outlets that reported the Hardy news cited the WWE website story. I do the same thing on a regular basis. For instance, I posted their story on Evan Bourne this morning, and I don't think I'd have anything to feel guilty about if Bourne returned tonight and proved that it was a work. The mainstream media could do a better job of covering pro wrestling, but I don't fault them in this case. They reported the basics of the story and I'm sure they would have approached someone with "inside wrestling knowledge" eventually had this been a legitimate story.

I thought what WWE did was crap. I didn't order the show, but instead went to a local bar/grill to watch. I had not heard anything about the Jeff Hardy story until I got there and a friend mentioned it. When the show began, I had to remind myself that this is WWE, who will do anything to have their name heard, so I dismissed the story as fake.

Given the push he had up to Survivor Series, I am sure plenty of people who ordered the pay-per-view are very pissed with the bait and switch. I would be too if I had ordered it thinking that tonight might be the night Jeff Hardy wins the championship. It's one thing (and makes me mad enough) to have them bait and switch on normal basis on TV, but its a totally different thing when people in this crap hole economy shell out $40 dollars and get that crap done to them.

WWE thinks they made people happy with the John Cena victory. I am so sick of this super Cena character. Those Cena videos talking about what a tough person he is and how when he was a kid it was his dream to work in WWE and be a WWE champion makes me want to barf. Is Cena the only person in WWE who had the dream as a kid to be in WWE one day? I don't think so. If I have to watch one of those tonight I will turn the show off all together.

By the way, I thought Edge looked like a highlander tonight.
