Ric Flair's antics and agent cost him a business opportunity, fan frustrated by his recent life decisions
Sep 15, 2008 - 11:00 AM

The following feedback was sent in regards to Jason Powell's "The Sad Truth about Ric Flair" editorial, which can be read by clicking here.

Nice editorial on Ric Flair. At his age, his continued problems are indeed sad.

I wanted to share with you a quick observation. After Flair's big retirement angle and sendoff, I truly thought that perhaps he and his family would sail off into the sunset and enjoy happiness and peace. After all, that final shot of Flair and his adoring family in the ring on Raw being cheered by fans and his peers seemed like the picture-perfect ending to Flair's career.

I actually had hope for the guy. But once again it was just images, not reality. After 26 years as a wrestling fan, shame on me. I ought to know better that what I see on the TV and the reality of these people's lives is very different. Flair is an example of a guy who at the age of 60 you'd think would have long ago learned life lessons about how to act like a mature human being. Yet for all his success, fame and wealth, he still can't seem to get his shit together, even after multiple opportunities.

One of those opportunities came from—me. I would rather not give you my name or the business I work for, but let me say this: after Flair left WWE and took on his agent, I contacted Gillespie Agency with a possible business opportunity for Flair. After seeing him supposedly clean up his act, I was impressed and wanted to talk to him and his agent about what could have been a legitimate and possibly lucrative deal with a major sponsor.

His agent "promised" that she'd read my proposal and get back to me, because she and Ric were traveling. I heard nothing. That was about three weeks ago. And now...this. He's drunk, with a black eye, bruises and cuts, the cops show up, and his kid is arrested. Way to go, Ric.

Here's a news flash for you: there's nothing funny or cute about a 60 year-old man who can't control himself. You might have been the life of the party back in the 1980s, but life is not a cocktail lounge, or a club, or a hotel lobby, and the antics that people joked about twenty and thirty years ago look flat-out dumb for a man your age now.

I don't know exactly what happened that night, and frankly I don't care. All I know is that after reaching out to the guy with a very real business opportunity, I was blown off. Clearly, Flair is not mature enough to deal with on an adult level, and this alleged agent of his doesn't even have the good sense to call me back to explore an opportunity for her client. Her lack of professionalism—and his stupid behavior—demonstrated to me that as much as I loved him as an on-air character, the real life person and all that surround him are one big train wreck.

If Flair wants to travel the country signing his name for a hundred bucks a pop and spend his down-time being an overgrown adolescent and getting drunk and picking fights, then fine with me. But I'd like him to know that he did in fact blow his chance at something much more promising from a long-time fan who was in a position to make it happen for him.

I'm very disappointed. But I'll move on, because I have dozens of other, better deals in the works. None will be with Ric Flair.

Great article as much as it breaks my heart to say that. It's always tough when one of your heroes can't get there shit together. I was really hoping he would be able to settle in with his role as ambassador with WWE, and settle down with his new wife. I think back on his first dvd when they held the surprise celebration for him when Raw went off the air and he's talking about what a great place he is in (mentally), after going through rough years. I was optimistic that he was on the right track.

Then the road rage and messy divorce popped up. Then the IRS popped up and it was looking bleak.

Then he got married again and started a finance company. I thought "Great, he is not going to go out like the others from his era." Sigh.

There is still time for the man but the window is closing. How much p---- does one man really need after awhile? I hope to God that he can start saving money and spend time with the family he has neglected for so long.

It's time for Ric Flair to stop being Ric Flair and grow up.
