A news reporter explains why Nick Hogan's audio recordings were released, reader criticizes Dot Net for being too hard on the Hogans

I am a current news reporter and as suggested by another reader, the media likely requested any taped conversations. This is entirely within the media's rights, and anyone else's rights for that matter. A majority of Open Records Requests, in fact, do not come from media, but rather, from the general public. There are notorious cases of this from SEC conference schools, where fans will file Open Records Requests to see e-mails, phone numbers dialed, etc. from their own football coaches and opposing coaches as well to find out if they're going to be staying or leaving. Yes, perhaps a little obsession-filled requests there. But then again, isn't it a little be obsessive to be filing open records requests on a former professional wrestler's son?

For those who think it is an invasion of privacy, remember that your tax dollars (I hope you are a taxpayer) are paying for these public services. There is a very good reason that this information is publicly available if requested. You have a right to know how your money is being spent, whether it be salaries of elected officials and their employees, or pay phones at a jail. I'm sure people would be chiming in the importance of the taped conversations if Nick Hogan was revealing how terrible jail conditions were and how guards were mistreating them. Oh wait, he did. Well, in that case, if he had legitimate complaints on the conditions of jail. For example, if the food was poisoned or if the jail cells were filled with mold, cockroaches and asbestos.

I think you're out of line with the Hogan audio tapes.

As far as terms like "Nicky," "Brookey," etc, they are a family. How families address each other is personal and who are we as outsiders to objectively say it's right or wrong. Dont forget Linda Hogan wiped this kid's ass when he was a baby and he's been her child ever since. To mock her calling him "Nicky" seems silly on your part. Maybe you're parents and siblings were cold and distant with you, but not all families are that way.

Hulk Hogan using Snoop Dog language is the same way. They may be goofing off and that's how they talk. When I talk with my girlfriend, I'm sure there are silly things we say to each other that if someone eavesdropped would say, "Oh that's cheesy," but who cares cause it's between us. Again, who are you or anyone else to say how two family members who have known each other 10-plus years should talk to each other. Should they be more formal and speak proper English for your sake, since you just happened to walk in on year 18 or so of their relationship?

Hogan and Nick talking about wearing whatever to court for sympathetic factor is honest talk. Anyone else would say that. It is not necessarily inconsistent with him being remorseful. Having remorse and wanting better jail conditions are two separate issues.

Hogan's might be more goofy than the average family, but I will guarantee you that if you listened in on conversations on any other family at a single point in time (except the Powells, apparently based on your holier-than-thou attitude), they would all say stuff
that would make us cringe or laugh.

As for Hogan putting sunblock on "Brooke," I'm pretty sure that's his girlfriend (Jennifer, the one he was referring to in the audio where he talked about Bible Thumping) who happens to look a lot like Brooke.

No name included

Powell's POV: First, I've already stated that I wasn't going to make a big deal out of Nick and Brooke using those names for one another since they're brother and sister and it's probably just in good fun. Second, I also stated that Hulk isn't the first father to look like a dork while trying to act cool for a teenage son. Third, I'm sure my family and I say some silly things, but I'll guarantee that you wouldn't hear us badmouthing the victim if one of us was stupid enough to street race and ruin someone's life. Fourth, that was Brooke in the photo. Fifth, say your prayers and eat your vitamins.
