Reader comments (and editor response) on WWE King of the Ring, MMA-style main events in TNA

I just heard about the King of the Ring next week on Raw and just wanted to pass down who I think might win. That wrestler would be Mr. Kennedy. Everything just fits so right. His character has been stale for a while now and I think King Kennedy could turn things around for him. Just passing along my prediction.

Powell replies: I'd be cool with that. I have no idea if he's actually going to appear in the tournament, though. He's been away making Behind Enemy Lines 3. I suppose it's worth noting that WWE.com teased him (along with several other wrestlers) as a possibility for winning the tournament.

I am a huge MMA fan and I have to tell you that the match wasn’t bad but the “MMA elements” didn’t help it. Mixed Martial Arts is exciting, but not when you add it to a worked situation. Having Frank Trigg—who is a great analyst—provide commentary reeks of gimmick and took away from the match as he played heel.

Furthermore as an MMA fan some of the transitions seemed to be completely unrealistic. If TNA wants to work stiff with more traditional moves, that’s great, more power to them, and an injury ridden roster that will follow. But hopefully they will remember what they are—a professional wrestling company.

Powell replies: I don't think they necessarily have to work an overly stiff style to work in more MMA-like spots. The crowd was really popping for the submission attempts and holds. I'm not an advocate of having MMA take over TNA main events.

I have no problem if they work that style in more often, but I'd rather see them showcase Samoa Joe's versatility by having him work an MMA style against certain opponents, and then work a pro wrestling style against guys like A.J. Styles and Christopher Daniels in other matches. More than anything, I just want to see TNA focus on delivering quality main event matches with clean finishes.
