Random thoughts on the Undertaker vs. Edge feud, Randy Orton's injury, and Jim Ross's Bar-B-Q business
By Jason Powell Jun 2, 2008 - 12:47 PM

Monday, JUNE 2 - 12:47 P.M.

-Did I misjudge the Undertaker vs. Edge feud? I think I may have. The WrestleMania 24 outcome seemed obvious even though the match was very entertaining. The followup matches at Backlash and Judgment Day were very also very good despite one predictable finish that was followed by a cheap finish. It appeared we were headed toward another predictable finish at the pay-per-view yesterday when WWE took us all by surprise.

The finish of the match made me look at their entire program differently. There really were some strong matches during their feud and the climax (at least until Taker returns) was a wild match with a finish so shocking that the otherwise hot live crowd sat in stunned silence.

WWE booked Taker vs. Edge correctly in the sense that they didn't make it a career vs. career match. Had they taken that approach, most people probably would have assumed that the Dead Man was going to be taking time off and going to lose the match. By making it a lopsided retirement stipulation, WWE led viewers to believe that Taker would win the match and keep his career alive.

Allowing so many viewers assume that Taker was going to win and then regain the title may not have sold as many pay-per-views as a career vs. career match, but it should lead to fans being more open minded the next time WWE advertises such a stipulation. In retrospect, the only match I can think of that would have stirred up more interest and left people guessing would have been Taker's career vs. Edge's hair. I'm not complaining, though. That was an excellent match with a shocking twist at the end.

-Tough luck for Randy Orton. I'm not sure what the plan was for Orton coming out of this pay-per-view, but in some ways the timing couldn't have been better. Orton's wife is expecting their first child next month, so he'll get to spend some extra time at home leading up to the delivery. Furthermore, it will give the Orton character a break from television following his program with Triple H.

-I mentioned recently that I finally gave in and placed an order at J.R.'s Bar-B-Q. I ordered one package of the four flavors of beef jerky and a bottle of the original Bar-B-Q sauce. I really wanted to try the chipotle ketchup, but the shipping cost to add a second bottle was so high that I decided to wait until next time.

I placed my order the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and received it in the mail on Tuesday morning. Nice turnaround time. I consider myself a wannabe jerky connoisseur in that I can't get enough of the stuff and a member of my stepfather's family ran a small jerky business that specialized in venison jerky, which might be the tastiest treat ever made.

Ol' J.R. might want to find out whether someone in his company holds large shares in tape stock, because that box was sealed tighter than Mick Foley's wallet. Sure, I could have used a scissors, but that's like stopping to ask for driving directions. I eventually won my battle (not really, I used the f'n scissors), opened the box and was pleased to discover that my order was correct, which isn't always the case when shopping online.

My visual impression of the jerky was mildly disappointing because I tend to enjoy tender chunks more than thin slices. However, my disappointment faded the moment I took my first bite. I quickly opened all four packages and sampled each flavor. Delicious. I'm partial to the chipotle flavor, and my girlfriend liked the pepper flavor, but all four were tremendous. I also love that you can reseal the bags.

Overall, highly recommended. The shipping costs suck, but Ross has mentioned in his blog that he's not inflating those costs, so that just goes with the territory. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to use the Bar-B-Q sauce, so I'll give you an update within the next week or so. In the meantime, I encourage all my fellow beef jerky lovers to try J.R.'s product at JRsbarbq.com.

And if you order now and tell them that Dot Net sent you, J.R. will send you, well, whatever you order. Anyway, two of the four beef jerky flavors are on sale, so this is a good time to sample the product.
