TNA Genesis Hitlist: A.J. Styles vs. Kurt Angle, Ken Anderson debuts, Brian Kendrick makes a surprise appearance, TNA drops the six-sided ring, Beer Money vs. Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman

TNA Genesis Hits

A.J. Styles vs. Kurt Angle: An excellent main event with a twist at the end. I prefer Styles as a babyface and I think the company is guilty of doing too many turns with him, but I love the idea of Flair serving as his mouthpiece. Heck, how about putting Styles together with Beer Money and an enforcer such as Matt Morgan in a new faction. Obviously, they can't be the Four Horseman, nor should they be, but Flair leading a heel faction could be fun. The big flaw with the main event had nothing to do with wrestler execution. I simply didn't care whether Angle lost the match and his shot at future title matches in 2010. We've seen the match too many times and it was hard to get excited about the latest version even though I knew we'd get great in-ring performances.

Amazing Red vs. Brian Kendrick: Kendrick was a pleasant surprise. He was misused in WWE and I have high hopes for him in TNA. He looked weak by losing his debut match when he had the advantage in that the storyline was that Red had no idea who he was facing. However, it would have made TNA look weak to have a former WWE wrestler beat their X Division Champion on his first night. As such, this was a nice win for Red and a quality opening match.

Ring change: I was not a hater of the six-sided ring. In fact, I initially liked it because it was different and therefore caught the eyes of viewers as they were flipping channels. However, it simply became the norm after seeing it a few times, just as the four-sided ring became the norm after a match or two last night. I enjoyed the way Hulk Hogan stood his ground with the fans who were calling for the return of the six-sided ring. My guess is that this will blow over by the time next month's television tapings roll around.

Ken Anderson debuts: I didn't care for the way he debuted, but I think Anderson can be a big asset for the company. I know there are plenty of people who think he was overhyped by Hulk Hogan on last week's Impact, but were you really expecting him to say, "Order the pay-per-view to see a guy who never broke into the main event picture in WWE and was eventually released by the company"? Furthermore, Kennedy could live up to the hype that Hogan gave him if the company pushes him hard enough.

Desmond Wolfe vs. D'Angelo Dinero: The match was fine and creative appears to be going out of their way to right the wrong of having Wolfe put over Dinero on January 4. The Pope has a ton of potential, but Wolfe is ready now and the company desperately needs main event level heels. Wolfe's new look screamed Christian, but it was still an upgrade over his previous ring gear. I love the idea of giving him a valet.

TNA Genesis Misses

Overall show: I watched the show knowing the identities of the two surprises, so perhaps the show was more entertaining for fans who didn't know. I was looking forward to the show even though it didn't look great on paper. The main event was great, but most of the matches felt uneventful and the show was just sort of there.

Ken Anderson vs. Abyss: A squash win over an undercard wrestler would have packed more of a punch than Anderson cheating to beat Abyss, who just tapped out to Samoa Joe on January 4. Debuting wrestlers should leave the viewers wanting more. The match was nothing special and I didn't leave the show excited to see what's next for Anderson. That said, it's nothing the company can't correct at the Impact tapings this week.

Matt Morgan and Hernandez win the TNA Tag Titles: I still can't get over the way TNA built up Morgan with his big performance against Kurt Angle at Bound For Glory only to move him into forgettable tag team programs ever since. Meanwhile, they split up the great LAX tag team just to put Hernandez back into a tag team role with a singles wrestler?

Daniels vs. Sean Morley: The Val Venis character was played out years ago. Morley is a talented guy who desperately needs to abandon the act and come up with a new persona. The lame porn and big dick jokes are just plain tired. The match was decent, but I had a hard time caring because nothing was at stake and the match felt so irrelevant.

Beer Money vs. Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman: This was supposed to be a match between a big name team from the past and one of the best teams in the world. Instead, they played rock/paper/scissors to pull Scott Hall from the match. I guess that fits with the care free attitude of Hall's character, but it came off like a bait and switch when it didn't need to. A simply acknowledgement of Hall's injury would have been suffice. By the way, the finish was atrocious with Hall beating up the planted fan for no reason.

Tara vs. ODB: I've stopped caring about the TNA Knockouts Title because the change the belt so frequently. The company has to get back to giving us quality women's matches. They have the talent to deliver the best matches in the business rather than the rush jobs we have been getting.

Brooke Hogan: Go away. I could live with Brooke taking part in an angle like she did with Randy Orton on Raw a few years ago, but I don't need to see countless shots of her at ringside during TNA matches.
