TNA Impact Hits
Matt Morgan joins Team Cage: A good angle that finally gets Morgan in the ring. Unfortunately, it also required Cage's teammates to wear those cheesy "Team Cage" t-shirts throughout the show. I know I'm probably making too much of a fuss over those shirts, but I just couldn't help but envision Christian showing up and saying: "Hey, guys, I have a surprise for you. I had "Team Cage" t-shirts made for all of us. Just in case people can't tell you're on my team when they facing you, I had 'Team Cage' placed on the back. We're a real team now, guys! Sorry, but the guy at the t-shirt place wouldn't give me a deal on the 'Team Cage' hats."
Despite the t-shirts, they did a good job of not giving away the swerve during the broadcast, and the payoff was solid. I hope they take the time to explain next week why Morgan, who has been presented as a dumb heel for months now, suddenly agreed to work with Cage. Please tell me that we're not going to get the patented Vinny Ru double-swerve by having Morgan turn heel at the pay-per-view.
Kurt Angle: I like the serious, suit wearing Angle. I was all for TNA letting him show off his comedic side that was such a hit in WWE, but they took it too far most weeks. The serious Kurt in the suit even reminded me a little of this guy who retired over the weekend. It's a small touch, but it makes TNA look a little more major league when their performers dress up occasionally, and Angle really looked like a star last night.
Shark Boy and Curry Man: I've been critical of TNA for going overboard with the comedy, but these two get a laugh out of me more often than not. I still think there's money in Christopher Daniels without the goofy mask gimmick, but Shark Boy and Curry are fun in small doses.
TNA Impact Misses
Sting vs. James Storm: Their work during the match was fine and Sting has really clicked on the mic over the last two weeks. I just hate the idea of giving Storm that big push last week and then knocking him right back into a mid-card role this week. It just felt like a wasted opportunity. Getting back to mic work, Storm has really improved in that area. He has the potential to be a really good heel, but there's only so far he'll go with this beer-swilling gimmick. Yes, I know Steve Austin chugged a few beers over the years, but he didn't do it in a manner that suggested he was more concerned with drinking than facing his opponents. Even Sandman's entrance was different because it sent the message that beer for him was similar to spinach for Popeye. The way Storm does it makes it seem like he's not really taking his match seriously.
Overall show: A step back after last week's strong live show. I enjoyed the Morgan angle, but I didn't care for the lame finish in the Tomko and A.J. Styles vs. Christian and Rhino match, and the overall show just had too much going on. TNA still tries to cram too much in during their two hours. I wish they'd feature better and longer matches and cut back on all of the commotion backstage. This wasn't a horrible show, but it definitely wasn't as enjoyable as last week and it really didn't do much to sell me on the pay-per-view.
Monsters of Rock: Please, just make it stop!
